Vanderbilt EDI 2018 Applicants' Discussion Thread

I’ve never been so happy before. ACCEPTED with a 33 and a 4.0
Congratulations to all accepted! If you weren’t accepted, please remember that there is a plan for you!! You were not meant to be at Vanderbilt, and you will thrive somewhere else! Be proud of your accomplishments-- all of you worked unbelievably hard.

Just a bit upsetting because people with weaker applications than mine at my school got into top 20 schools ED. This was my only top 20 school, and my parents said this or a state school. (Plus, I loved this school, but yeah.)
I wish you all who got accepted the best of luck at Vandy!

Saratoga it stinks I’m with you  I’m only upset with myself because I feel like if I worked harder in high school I would have had a better chance.

Please keep your head up, remember way more of us were rejected than accepted so we’re all here with you.

Again - Congratulations to everyone who was accepted!

Brother (sophomore at Vandy) talked to one of his friends at the admissions office–friend said applicants this year had BY FAR the most outstanding applications! Mostly accepted people with 32+ ACT/ 2200+ SAT scores because so many applicants had great essays and ECs.
Looks like they weren’t necessarily able to be holistic this time!
Last time I’ll be posting here, I promise hahaha. Okay but seriously, I’m sooooo happy for all of you that got in!

Sorry for her.SAT:2300=ACT:35 , Right? Can I ask why?
Did you have any hospital volunteering?
Did you have any part-time job?
Did you have any executive internship?
Did you have any sport and club?
Did you have any SAT 2 subject ?
Did you have any AP test result?
What is your state?
She will get superior one soon.

Is there one school at vanderbilt harder to get into than another? I got in the School of engineering with a 33 act, 4.0. Are the stats better for one school or another?

My son’s GPA is lower that the Vandy average but he had great ECs, essays, recs, etc. as well as a 35 ACT. He was denied ED1. They are certainly not only pursuing high test scores exclusively, although he was certainly hoping that was going to be the case! He is disappointed but will have choices at a number of excellent schools as will everyone else who didn’t get in this year.

Accepted ED1
33 ACT
English: 34
Math: 35
Reading: 34
Science: 32
GPA UW: 3.79 W: 3.97
7-time Volunteer Service Dog Raiser
Special Olympics Club Member
2 trips to Africa (Uganda and Rwanda)
4-year Varsity Golfer

Congrats to everyone else who got accepted! Can’t wait to see you all! Best of luck to those attending other schools!

They just don’t have enough spots for all the well qualified students. It’s now harder to get into Vanderbilt than Brown, UPENN, Dartmouth, JHU, and Cornell.

I was also denied. I had a 30 ACT but a 4.7 weighted GPA (4.0 unweighted). I had excellent letters of rec, I am an AP scholar with distinction, national honors society member etc, 8 AP classes with mostly all 5s, …I started a philanthropy and have been a competitive gymnast (nationally ranked) for 12 years. I even wrote a novel. It frustrates me that Vanderbilt said they look at the application holistically, but it seems that it was the scores that they were most interested in. I also applied to SMU as well as several other schools throughout the US. I am confident that other colleges will see what I can bring to their school and shame on Vanderbilt for being so shallow.

Absolutely thrilled to soon be part of the Vandy family! Son accepted from NJ with 4.6 GPA(w), 4.0(unweighted), 2260 SATs. Applied ED Vandy over Duke after visits to both (Vandy vs Georgia weekend probably clinched it).
Congrats to all those who were accepted. To all the strong candidates that didn’t make it there are many other top schools that will be privileged to have you! I agree that it seems sometimes the holistic admissions process is influenced by pre-screening of scores given a record number of ED applicants and Vandy being one of the hottest rising schools over the past 5 years!!

Best college prep school in our city was denied all 3 of its EDI applicants. Tough to figure.

Hi guys! I know I’m a '17er but I wanted to crash your thread for a sec to say hi. And to those accepted I just wanted to say WELCOME and you will all love it here, I promise. :)

To those deferred/rejected–you will end up loving wherever you go, seriously. I was rejected from my ED school last year, so I feel you guys, but it will all work out, I swear.

If anyone has questions for a current freshman feel free to PM me/write them here. (I know I started a thread a while back but then finals slowed me down for a while.)

I have a feeling that many prospective students who are considering applying to Vandy ED2 or regular may be reading this site for information. Lets go beyond the issue of stats since we can see that it is hard to predict who might get accepted—with so many amazing students who were denied. New members of the Class of 2018, what made you choose Vandy?

Signed,
sadieshadow (parent)

Does anyone know how many acceptances there were out of how many applications to ED1?

Living61, Vanderbilt in the past has only published combined ED1 and ED2 stats so we won’t know that information as far as I can tell unless someone has an in at the admissions office???

I sincerely wanted to apologize for what I asked to Vegasmom23. I didn’t take her feelings into consideration. She did a nice job for “SAT (2400) 2300, SAT II Lit, 710. GPA 3.95”.
Why? She should get in.“When one door closes, another door opens.” I pray for her.

Thanks Sadie. Interesting seeing the stats here. It does seem like Vandy wasn’t as holistic as some of the other top schools. Look at the ED threads on Dartmouth, Emory, and others. As much as I know Vanderbilt is a dream school for many, it may not be the right fit anymore. It’s changed. Look at USC. They are so focused on stats and diversity that the fabric of the school has morphed tremendously. It is an amazing institution but very different than what it was 10 years ago. I personally think the new recruits aren’t the network and family that USC is known for. As the profiles of top schools changes across the US, I wonder if schools are creating a sea of strangers and a country of competitors instead of a class of colleagues. Don’t get me wrong : the students are amazing. I just hope these schools take a look at their own souls. Their own spirits. And like I tell my D, they don’t “lose” themselves in all the competition.

Denied with a 4.3 GPA, 2170 SAT, unbelievable recs and extracurriculars

Collegebound524 and the others who were rejected–please know you will be successful in the college search and beyond. Your years of preparation and hard work will pay off. Stay proud of what you have accomplished.
