@somehmonggirl Honestly I’m not a huge fan of Milwaukee. Really tired of it already. I like Marquette but hate the city. Marquette is a good school and much more challenging academically than I anticipated, but it is expensive.
@somehmonggirl Ive never been to vandy and will not visit even if I get in. MY question is, do you think theres a big acedmic culture there. I love intellectually convos and talking about world events, do you think I can fulfill my desire for that their? Its hard for me to fulfill it at my uni, everyone is, eh, not engaged, to say the least.
@HopefullyIGetIn Emory wanted 250-650 words for their “Why Emory” essay. I included some stuff about a specific research program, but I figured since I’m a transfer and have a good sense of what I want/need it made sense for my app to be pretty “goal-oriented,” so some of it was definitely “you have a lot of research, in a city, and locations especially good b/c right next to the CDC.”
I’m generally good at finding a group to fit in with pretty much anywhere. That’s not why I’m leaving, and I didn’t want to pretend it was.
@usualhopeful I’m really hoping that I get into one of the two schools. I would go to either school in a heartbeat. Only applied to those two colleges because they’re are the only colleges I would go to over my current college.
@usualhopeful yea, I actually got really close to applying their(I sent my SAT, college report, transcripts, but not application lol) but I just couldn’t see myself their I guess. IDK, it seems that campus Is boring and has no campus pride. Thus, I couldn’t write their supplement essay, I just couldn’t envision myself their.
@HopefullyIGetIn the great part about vandy is it’s full of those kids that are really well rounded. they aren’t snobby, they are so laid back and mostly kind (generalization) but they’re all very smart and involved as well. I sat in on my (ex) boyfriends philosophy discussion class and everyone was so engaged and thoughtful. In my philosophy class, nobody but me and one annoying hardcore libertarian ever talked! i loveeee vandy so i’m biased but i really think vandy has a great social environment both for fun and for mentally stimulating things.
@HopefullyIGetIn I really like it, but I don’t know whether it’s 2nd or 3rd on my list. On the one hand, I’m interested in infectious disease and it has THE CDC RIGHT THERE, but I also want to be in a busy location like Vandy seems to be. My current campus feels isolated and I really dislike that feeling. I can’t visit so I don’t know what either of them is actually like in that regard.
@somehmonggirl sounds amazing. One more question. You think its preppy? this is actually my biggest worry about Vandy, I’m a jeans and hoodie 24/7 type of guy
We’re definitely going to reach 100 pages.
Will the decisions come out tomorrow?
@usualhopeful some people feel vandy is isolated in a good way from the rest of nashville. some people feel stuck in a bubble when they’re there. it depends on you. it’s within walking distance to a lot of stuff, just not particularly to downtown nash.
Lol vandy is definitely preppy
@luckybaby probably not
@usualhopeful yea, I totally understand why your into it if you want med school. Their med department is great. Which brngs me to another reason I didn’t apply, their econ department is really bad(relative to overall strength of school). I rember looking at their course offerings and being so disappointed.
@HopefullyIGetIn idk my (ex) boyfriend (was) in a frat and he wears pretty much all the time jeans/khakis/shorts and a t shirt (maybe a flannel once in a while) and didn’t seem out of place.
but if you’re a girl god forbid you go to a tailgate in anything other than a black romper/dress and cowboy boots… well that’s what seems to be the most popular outfit lol
@somehmonggirl makes sense. MY plan is that if I get in I’m going to get in contact with some vandy students so I can ask these questions to them. (I know ppl iIRL who know vandy ppl)
@HopefullyIGetIn Yeah, I’m also interested in academic medicine and Emory sends more students to MSTPs than Vandy, which is probably mostly a cultural thing, but I wonder if it might be smoother with faculty who have more experience with students going that route. Emory’s also got a higher average GPA, but no eng’g school, so that’s probably meaningless.
@somehmonggirl isn’t vandy only 2 miles from downtown?
@HopefullyIGetIn oh i didn’t know that you would be down to casually walk 2-3 miles … i hardly wanna walk to my kitchen tbh lol… its not super far but being realistic unless you have a car you probably won’t find yourself there a lot
