Just checked my daughter’s portal and yes her financial aid checklist is back

Yes, ours is back also.

My daughter wisely decided to go rock climbing for 4-5 days across each of the different decision dates. She said after being deferred by her ED1 school there was no reason to sit with anticipation because it wouldn’t change anything in the moment. It must have worked because she got into every school since. Hopeful for more good news in the coming days (but she’ll be out of cell service range for most of it)

Good for her!! Sounds like she has a great outlook on these things, and life in general. If you know that it is out of your hands, then enjoy life in the meantime!

If anyone is wondering if their junior and senior should take a gap year I am here to say DO IT! It has been night and day compared to her senior year. It was very obvious on campus visit / info sessions. The whole process was so much less stressful and she actually got more merit this year than from any of the schools who accepted her last year (she did not defer and elected to start all over).

It will not hurt your chances if you have a plan and in fact could make you more interesting.

Good for her! Everyone I’ve known who has taken a gap year has done it after they accepted a spot at a school. That’s great to hear - and you must be really proud of her!

That’s interesting to hear. My D is seriously considering a gap year, but if she does, is planning to accept and defer. She’s quite young and it sort of feels like a bonus year. She may get swept up in the excitement though and want to go for it.

This is part of the problem with only having a month to make a decision. She also has to take that into consideration. Most schools seem open to it, but we don’t know if they will be more strict about the kind of plans they need since more kids are doing it with covid. And she would only have another month after depositing to submit the plan. I think whether she is admitted to her top choices (Vassar being one) will have an impact on if she does it or not.

Did your D find it was easy to get all the needed stuff from her high school to apply again?

Good luck to her!

Honestly the school did very little. And she went to an expensive private school so we were annoyed despite their ‘promises’. I will say that I was not a believer in a private college counselor and I am now. My kid was also skeptical and told me so. BUT she called her counselor the angel at her doorstep when she was done with her applications. It definitely lowered the temperature at home.
I get why kids defer. You have to be fairly sure about your selection but they are non binding. But I also feel that so much changed for her between January and May. I don’t know if it was Covid, her or what
probably a mix of all three. Of all the schools my kid applied to this year (7), only one was a repeat from last year (out of 4). And she would be happy at any of them though I would say now, there are clear front runners.

Our only requirement was that she had to have a plan and it couldn’t be a year of sleeping in. We were also not willing to pay the equivalent of college tuition for a gap year program. It was really a time to grow up a little, really build self driven desire for going to college. She ended up working 25-30 hours a week and got a few promotions and raises. She was also hired by her high school to guest teach a class in a subject that she was a TA for 2 years). The rest of the time she climbed and skied, attempted a summit of Mt Baker. This summer she will be traveling Europe for a month then hike part of the pacific crest trail with her dad for a week. So it was a good balance of fun, real life (realized quickly that $18 an hour doesn’t go that far) and some experiences that stretched her.

I still think she’s my baby. I don’t think that will change :joy:

I was proud before :). As we watched her make decisions during the course of the year and witnessing her growth, it was absolutely the right decision. Not right for everyone but for the right kid, no reason to be afraid.

Anyone think there’s a chance to hear from Vassar by tomorrow, or is it looking like next week?

I was hoping for this weekend maybe!

Probably the only school, other than Georgetown, in their league to not say by now when

Wesleyan hasn’t said either
 sigh

Yes, they announced Saturday, I think. (They had a 2 day countdown up yesterday).
