Very low GPA undergrad looking to transfer post-academic dismissal.

As the title states, I was academically dismissed from New York City College of Technology due to a consistency of poor grades this past Fall 2016. Very low GPA. Around 1.5 if I remember correctly. I, however, realize that I truly do care about my education and I wish to really shake myself out of my laziness and excel when I go back to school. I still had tuition left over to pay so I was not able to register my application for the upcoming Fall 2017 transfer app right away. I had to wait until early February to turn in an app since I was able to finish paying around that time for the semester. Now, my application is being reviewed currently, but I am very concerned because, although I have applied to 3 Community Colleges and 1 4 year college, I contacted most of the community colleges to learn their policies regarding a student wishing to transfer after getting DISMISSED from a CUNY and leaving with a very LOW GPA, and most, if not all, stated that they expect at least a 2.0 or 2.5 GPA I believe. I cannot go to Kingsborough college because that place is far out of reach. Therefore, my options were Bronx CC, BMCC, Medgar Evers, and Lehman because they all have the major I’m interested in. So is it possible for me to get into one of these schools based on my situation?

I don’t know about those specific schools, but I do know some schools have “academic forgiveness” or “academic bankruptcy” programs. Typically there’s a period of time required where the student is not attending school (2-3 years), but then the student is permitted to try again and the prior academic record is wiped clean.

If such a program exists, it usually only extends to your academic record. Financial Aid has its own rules about qualifying for aid, so you need to make sure you are eligible to receive aid if you are counting on this assistance.

Just wishing

is not enough - you need to really understand why you did poorly last fall, and how/why this attempt will be different.

Best wishes to you.

I said, “to really shake myself out of my laziness and excel when I go back to school”. I apologize if that sounded like a not too mature comment, but very seriously, I truly do understand why I was continuing to get poor grades. A lot of a apathy, laziness, and procrastination. When I say I am ready to go back and start over, I completely stand by it. But I thought for a majority of schools a 1 semester absence was needed for readmission to CUNY. I am not looking to let that much time pass by to come back. I truly do care about my education and I wish to go back A.S.A.P. And actually yes. BCC does have that certain program but as for the others, I guess I was too afraid to find out if they did not and so I just went with those like a normal candidate. I do not use Financial Aid because I’ve assumed that because of poor GPA, it’s not worth even going to set it up.

You are probably out of luck for admissions with the 4 year college now but many community colleges have an “open admissions” policy where they will accept students even if they are not in good academic standing (as you are not given your below 2.0 GPA). I’m not sure why those CCs that you contacted wanted transfers to have a higher GPA unless you are specifically applying for certain programs within the CCs that have decided to implement higher admissions standards. I looked at the Bronx CC website but they really didn’t say anything about the GPA requirement for transfers. I would apply to the local CCs and see what happens but you could inquire about whether your specific area (like pre-nursing, or pre-PA) employs a higher entering GPA threshold than the rest of the CC as a whole. You might have to enter as an undecided student.
