As it's often said, it's a sin to mention video games in your college essay. I built a gaming community, hired sponsors, spent countless hours in debugging server issues. And video gaming is now e-Sports whose players are recognized as professional athletes by the government. How about that for a go?

If it’s something that demonstrates your passion, go for it. My school has one of the top CS programs in the world and most of the CS majors say they’re in it because video games and make no attempt to hide their interest.

Sorry for the late reply, @dividerofzero.
I had this query because of reading things like “write about what you do apart from studies, but don’t mention videogames or similar.” I think the activity should definitely not matter, rather this values. When a ‘learning to pack cookies’ essay can be listed in JHU: Essays that worked, videogames can outshine. Just the name.

If you’re going into a computer science related major, I’d say it’s pretty relevant. Video games are a big industry these days. Given the nature of that topic though, you’re going to want to make it clear that you haven’t wasted all of your time sitting around playing video games. Be sure to mix in some other points as well.
