Well honestly, I am pretty bored at home so I play MMORPGs honestly too much. I know it is bad for my overall health, and I am pretty sure it would interfere with my grades and stuff therefore making it even harder to get in West Point. I was wondering if anyone could give me ideas of how to get off addicting video games. I am pretty sure some of you have gone through this phase and overcame it, tell me how you did it, I am getting rid of my bad habbits. Thanks.

Well, I feel for you. Video games are fun, this is true, but very addicting. And you get so into it you can't think of anything else. My first encounter with them was Super Mario and all that stuff on the SNES when I was little, but I got hooked later on FF7 and Sephiroth (For those who have no clue what I'm talking about, don't bother reading on). Anyhow, day and night I played that game, during school I thought about playing it and when not at school all I did was play. I even missed school quite a bit to get back and play it. Even after I completed the game I got hooked on the entire series, and thats all I did. Of course, I got into Halo, Call of Duty and some other stuff, even War Craft, but I really like the Final Fantasys. It definitely is an addiction that caused me to eventually weigh a gargantuan 230 lbs at 5'8"(probably shorter at the time). I lacked any athletic ambition, or ambition to do anything, period. The first impetus to stop was basically being away from them for a couple months when I marched Drum Corps. I still play occasionally, and when I do, I play alot, but the key, I think, is to just not start playing, get into sports, go run, do something else. If not, your entire life is just gonna pass you by. My motivation to get in shape and away from the games was West Point, and now I am very glad, as I think of my old self and laugh. (In a little over two years I went from 230+ lbs to my current weight of about 165-175 depending on what season it is. )

Okay thanks for that, I'll make sure I don't start any new games. I would love to get into sports and stuff, but my mom works so much I can only ride my bike everywhere. I would be running right now but I am too sore, haha, I am in great shape I think, 6'2, 160 pounds, 14 years old, and I take tae kwon do 5 days a week. Its not that I am fat, its that "its wasting my life". Is there something else fun to do that is worth while?

Find a club or sport that's after school to keep you off the couch and involved. Won't hurt later on when you add it onto your application, either ;)

Oops-- posted that a little late. I would think that riding your bike everywhere would be an advantage, though. Most sports ask you to not only do your best when you're with the team, but to work out at home on your own time. As for the running, you're going to have to get used to it, even if you're sore.

Find a running partner, if you can. Yu guiys can motivate each other to stick to your work outs and you'll have some one to talk to while you're running. Personally, I hate to run, but I've found that it's waaaaaay easier (especially when you're running distances) if you're running with some one else or as a group.

And as for "something else fun to do"-- join a club while it's early on in high school. That'll give you time to hopefully enjoy yourself, get away from video games, and eventually rise to a leadership position in that organization.

Acually I am still in middle school, lol. I am turning 15 in 9th grade, :-P

My high school since I need to ride my bike there too, I will probably stay after school for clubs because I don't need to worry about transportation. That is the problem in middle school. Thanks for the advice, I am going in JROTC in high school and will hopefully find someone who will train with me which would be much more fun.

none of my clubs meet after school, its all at lunch. sports are definitely after school.

you should go get battlefield 2 or counterstrike source, or a game that doesnt have a begininning and end, but just is a pickup game where you can start and stop whenever you want. warcraft 3 and medal of honor allied assault got me off of diablo 2 :)

Yeah I wish I could get battlefield 2 or counterstrike!!! My computer is Windows 95! Haha...I've been playing RuneScape which like never ends...I've acually gotten bored of it so I am happy.

well if you like computers and stuff, research them on the web, like Tom's Hardware.com or others. Working with computers really pays well, so maybe look into it.
Also I am very suprised that someone at your age is already looking into college, especially a military academy! Good luck with the computer games.

I, too, had a moderate problem with computer games too -- Half-Life 2, Jedi Knight, America's Army, Splinter Cell, Halo PC

That all went away in an instant when I applied for West Point. I'm thankful though. As a result, I my ambitions to become an officer had increased dramatically, and I'm in the best shape of my life, though I'm still a puny lil' asian kid XD --- very high metabolism, hehe.

I have Battlefield 2. I almost missed making Eagle Scout, because I spent too much time on it. Whenever I had free time, it was BF2 time...big mistake. I went cold turkey off all video games for a month to finish my project. My advice is to make sure you have all your other projects, homework, etc. done before thinking about video games. Also, play games with definite stopping points (i.e. levels that require saves or massive load times). Most of my friends are WoW addicts. It is kind of sad how much they play. I know that they could get a lot more done, if they would only get off their PCs for a while.

haha...my roommate was a WoW addict. I swear, every time I came into the room he was playing that game. I NEVER saw him study for even a minute. Occasionally he would do a few minutes of homework while waiting for the game to load, but other than that....

I hated him. The night before my History final last fall, he stayed up 'till 2 AM playing. I asked him around midnight to stop, and his reply was "this game is kinda important...I'm on a team, and if i quit, the other guys lose." GAH! That guy was lucky...I let him live. He eventually moved out because he couldn't stand me waking up at 0530 everyday.

Girlfriends are probably the best remedy for video games...but they're a completely different evil altogether...

Yeah my girl friend really gets me going out a lot which is cool. + All of her female friends ask me out a lot to go to places so it does a big effect.

do you ride your bikes there?

Haha yes unless she can give me a ride. Normally we just go to the beach or the movie theators which is a couple miles away so it doesn't matter. Lets not get too personal though, thats not what the topic is about.

"a different evil altogether..."

So true. I totally bombed AP Exams this year cause I was going out with this girl. Its pretty messed up. I never even did something like that over video games. Psh...worst part is we broke up right before school ended.
