@40yearoldvirgin I know it can be discouraging, frustrating and seem unfair. Keep in mind your high level stats may have been the “same”, but I doubt you each took the same classes all 4 years, received the same grades in each class, have the same activities / awards, applied to the same major, had the same reviewer and wrote the same essay’s. All these items are considered by the person evaluating thousands of applications, so there is subjectivity that factors in to the process you have no control over. Trying to make sense of it will drive you crazy. I promise there are thousands of very qualified candidates who are denied admissions and would be a great student. It is a numbers game. I know it doesn’t make it sting less, but hang in there…
@undercover007 bro I had 88% AVG(CBSE)
@SALSRL Bro i know all three are different but my Act score is high to be rejected.I got 88% in 12th(CBSE).I dont know where the weak part of my application is.
Son denied. OOS. Had applied for COE. SAT (m-640;cr-570); GPA 3.45; 11 honors and APs, varsity sports, many extracurriculars and community service. Oh well…
@Srijith97 They look at everything. Your essays, extracurriculars, 9-12th grade marks, etc. And just being above the 75th percentile doesn’t mean you’ll get admitted. I was denied from the college of engineering, but was accepted to the college of architecture for my second choice major. And I too had a good-ish academic record. I’m sure that he students in the college of engineering have much higher stats than many others and i’m 100% positive that the 75th percentile for the COE is waaay higher.
How did you know that you got admitted to your second choice. Mine just says “Offered admission” It doesn’t mention whether first or second choice.
@Srijith97 In response to why you weren’t accepted… my guess is that your grades weren’t as strong as others admitted. Please understand I’m not saying this to be unkind but am answering because you genuinely seem to want some ideas on this. The 88% you received essentially equates to a B+ - that translates to a 3.3-3.4 here. If this year’s engineering acceptances are similar to the last couple years, a majority of cum GPA’s are going to be in the 3.9/4.0+ range and just senior year GPA’s will predominately be well over 4.0 because senior year is a big year to take AP courses. I hope you take this in the spirit it was intended and it gives you a better idea of what VT is getting in terms of engineering applicants. Best of luck to you!
@elysium305 @JustGraduate Bro have seen the stats of other people,they are well below mine.I know people with 1500s and 1600s who got admitted.Bro in US the curriculum comprises of doing extracurriculars.Here in India there are extracurricular but no as robust as in US.My essays were fine because many people have proofread it and liked it.My 9th-12th grade Averages:82,93,80,88.Bro I think u already know how strenuous education can be in India.All I am trying to say is that when one rejects u they should give a valid reason why.I believe that Virginia tech should develop an international perspective when assessing international applicants…
@Srijith97 Hmmm.
I’m pretty sure Virginia Tech has Admission Officers who know all about the education systems in different countries. They cannot accept every international student who applies. You shouldn’t assume that just because you think you have good stats, you’re going to get accepted.
Have you applied to any safeties?
I’ve DM’ed you. Lets not hijack this thread.
I was declined. Is it possible for me to apply for the summer term and get in that way? I have a 3.60 but if they factorr in the end of my year grades from senior year it will be a 3.8 Weighted. I have a 1620 SAT - 1040 C + M. Lots of extracicirulars nad volunteering. Let me know what you guys think.
@Firecell I was declined. I am in state. Is it possible for me to apply for the summer term and get in that way? @sxzszx it is possible i was offered ‘conditional admission’ which means i am required to attend the summer academy and if i do not then i cant attend in the fall
@Srijith97 you say others have lower credentials, but the only credentials you keep comparing are the test scores. an 88% doesn’t mean but so much overall. each individual course you have taken and the grade in each course matters. also, tech has the highest number of international students in virginia (when you count grad students), so i’m pretty sure they are well versed on international systems - especially China, India, South Korea, and the Middle East (they are the biggest populations there).
@sxzszx, @Firecell is incorrect. if they didn’t offer you conditional admission then you didn’t qualify. its not something to sign up for, they have to give it to you.
@bhvima if it just says you were offered admission, that means you got into your first choice major You would know if it was your second major because it would say it in parenthesis!
I was offered admission into my first choice major!! To the people who didn’t get in or was waitlisted, don’t give up and lose hope. It doesn’t matter what school you go to but what you make of it while you are there! Best of luck to you all! Also, if you would like any advice or comments, feel free to ask me and I would be happy to help to the best of my ability.
Just got an acceptance letter in the mail!!! Shocked because my credentials are not even up to par. xD
@Srijith97 You have to understand that at most public universities in the US, international applicants are held to higher standard than domestic applicants. You are not entitled to admission simply by virtue of having higher than average test scores.
Your son should have definitely been accepted. I am so sorry to hear about that. What level math and courses did he take. Also did he do all essays? I am very sorry,… they’re the ones who missed out.
