Virginia Tech's Class of 2020!

@Firecell Thanks bro

@Firecell Dude so is there any possibility I will be admitted into general engineering this fall

@Srijith97 Unfortunately if they denied you there is no possibility for general eng. you could ask for another major and take class and change your major later on to general eng.

@Firecell there is no chance if I appeal too.Man this stings a lot I feel really hopeless. This isnt fair bro.I planned to take general engineering in 1st year then go on to major in Industrial engineering in 2nd year.

Son who is not on CC received admission today!

In State, ROVA
Pamplin, BIT (they admitted 120 students last year)
1980 SAT
4.25 GPA at application, 4.8 this year
lots of EC’s , robotics, computer club, Eagle Scout

1 choice

I wish everyone would say whether you are in state or not.
Congratulations to all who gained admission! ~:> ~:> ~:> ~:> Go Hokies!

This is like a nightmare

I was just accepted into Tech’s school of engineering (computer engineering intent). I am In state, 1250 2 part (690 M, 560 CR), ranked 5/370 in class, 9 varsity letters for 3 sports, beta club and national honor society, lots of volunteer work in the church, piano for 9 years, summer job. I was surprised I got in considering my SAT scores and how competitive Tech’s engineerig program has become.

@Srijith97 It never hurts to double check the decision and your stats. One of the schools my S applied to, repeatedly had his gpa wrong, WAY wrong. Somehow their system (they actually have 3 computer systems that share info) made a calc error. I think it possibly imported the data wrong from the Common App since they said they get it in a weekly download. 3 times my S checked with various depts and each time we found people to correct the error. Finally they realized that one of the 3 systems was over-riding the correction each time. We felt something was wrong when he didn’t receive an Honors invite. So we buried our pride (always a good thing) and humbly inquired. And then had to do this twice more over a period of Dec to March. THIS is why it never hurts to follow up. Sometimes mistakes are made. It is all about HOW you ask because you want the person you ask for help to WANT to help you. I have never found that the first person who answers the phone to be the right person, although they can point you in the right direction. Back to your school choices, please don’t be devastated. My S applied to 12 schools, all fine schools with some more prestigious than others. Their COE rankings varied from 127 to 5. So we had a couple “safety schools” that are fine schools, UK and Miss State, and others ranking from low 60s and up. If you do the research before hand, you may not get your top choices, but the financial awards may be better at the less flashy. I have interviewed more than 50 professional engineers that say what matters is you pick good school, and your own efforts are what help you rise after graduation. In fact, one of the gentleman I interview worked his entire career at 2 companies, Boeing and McDonnel Douglas as an EE. He was in a position to recruit engineering graduates for many years. He said his very best recruit EVER graduated from Murray State. He said he noticed all the students from there were exceptionally well prepared, so much so, that he paid the school a visit to see what they were doing different. The moral to this story is, while most want the school’s most well known, it is easy to overlook some excellent schools. So pick yourself up and know things will work out for you.

@Srijith97 Unfortunately, as an international student, you can not compare your stats to either in-state or OOS students. All three are different. Each state school usually has to accept a certain percentage of in-state students. They then take a certain amount of OOS students. International is the smallest percentage they are going to accept. Engineering is also VT’s most popular major and gets the most applicants. The schools look at each application in entirety, not just test scores. Best of luck to you.

@Srijith97 My son was denied a few months ago. He sent an email in February, but did not receive a response. He called the admissions a week and a half ago. They said someone would get back with him within 3 days. He hasn’t heard anything. He also wants a clear understanding of why he was denied, although he’s fairly certain it was his GPA. He thought his ACT scores would balance out the low GPA. He has to hear that from them.

Unfortunately, they have not been responsive. My son realizes it might take some time for them to get back with them due to spring break and the latest rounds of decisions. He just wants closure.

I know rejection is difficult to experience, but there is a school out there for you. It is not the end. I wish you the best of luck.

@ThreeRedheads are you sure they haven’t called back yet? tech is the most responsive large school i have ever encountered. If has been this much longer than 3 days something isn’t right. if something is wrong ie. incorrect telephone number transcribed you may never know.

personally, I would leave it alone. especially if he feels his grades weren’t good.

@Srijith97 why do you think your test score matters so much? what were your grades? your curriculum?

In case anyone wants to “appeal” their decision, here is the link for what VT needs / will consider.
http://www.admiss.vt.edu/apply/appeals/

Submitting an Appeal for Freshman Admission

-The appeal will only be accepted from the student, not from a parent or guardian.

-The appeal must be submitted within 30 days of receiving the notification of the original decision.

-The appeal must contain NEW information that was not included in the initial application. Examples of new information might include updated standardized test scores or a new transcript if it is determined that a teacher submitted an inaccurate grade. Additional letters of recommendation are not considered new information. Grades or test scores earned in the February/March time frame or later will not be considered. The appeals process is not a re-review process of the existing applicant file. Appeals will not be considered for applicants who are not submitting new information.

-The appeal should include an explanation of why the new information was not submitted originally.

-The Admissions Committee will notify you of its decision in writing.

I got in to my second choice school-- college of science for bio (premed)

Now I’m super confused because I don’t know if I should go to GMU Honors College or VT… anybody have any input they could give? Much appreciated!

@student810 What major at GMU? Is the cost comparable? Do you like one school more than the other?

@bboop42 same thing, pre med but I was thinking of calling this week and asking to change to engineering (I fell in love with math when I started taking calculus)… cost is pretty much the same except GMU is very close to my house (I’d still live on campus) and of course, for engineering, I love tech but I don’t have that option, they are both enjoyable schools in my opinion

S applied to engineering(cs intent) was admitted today to second choice major. VT was his last choice school since he wanted direct admission to a cs program, so he is withdrawing is app. Best of luck to all wherever you attend and make it your own!!

Denied. In state NOVA. Had the same exact stats as my friend and she got in–no resentment I’m just more confused as to how the admission process really works.

@student810 If you are seriously considering changing to engineering, it would be easier to move to that major at GMU. VT is making it more and more difficult to transfer from one major to Engineering. (to much demand, not enough space) In the past, current students could take Engineering classes at NRCC and those classes would transfer so the student could stay current before actually apply for a change of major. I believe that is not an option any longer. You can go see the requirements on the “change of major” for current student pages for these steps and it could increase the time needed to graduate.

If you are uncertain what major you really want, and you are happy with Bio/Pre-Med right now and the cost is similar…it might come down to which campus environment you prefer. The campus’ are very different. The location/setting is very different. You will need to decide what environment feels best for you.

Keep in mind, there is not a wrong or best answer…you have 2 great choices.

@bboop42 Thank you!
I had open heart surgery as a child, so I have wanted to be a cardiologist every since… but when I started taking calculus for the first time last year I kid you not I fell in love with it… my math teacher is encouraging me to go for a perfect score on the BC exam this year (not a 5, an actual perfect) and I really have a strong interest to learn more math & do some sort of engineering/software design with my interest, sooo it’s safe to say I am EXTREMELY confused  but I really do appreciate the replies they are very helpful
