I know on one old thread that m2ck said that someone from Bama can pick you up at the airport. Do they still do this? Or would I have to take a taxi? Is the best place to fly into Birmingham?

Yes, Jami Gates at the Honors College will arrange to have you picked up at Birmingham Airport. Give her your info ASAP. I think they use a shuttle service.

Jami won’t be in her office til Jan 4th.

205-348-5599

She will also be the one who will put you with an Honors student for an overnight visit. Tell her that you want a more “social” kind of host who can show you the nightlife, etc. There is one guy that I know volunteers for this, but he’s kind of the more serious type, so you’ll want another one of their other volunteers. (The guy is nice and friendly, but he’s just not what you would want - from what you’ve told us.)

Thanks. Is the shuttle a UA one? It’s not that I want a “partier” as my host, because I don’t. Just someone who is in the Honors College who will show me around at night and not be studying, because that’d be kind of boring. I just want to see what UA students do on Thursday nights.

I don’t think it is a UA shuttle, but I could be wrong. Visiting without parents will give you a better view of what a typical day would be like if you attended UA.

I don’t think it’s a UA owned shuttle either - and I don’t know for sure what Jami will do. She just told me that UA will arrange for your transportation to and from the airport if you tell her when.

I forgot about the “parents” question. Since you’ll be staying overnight, it’s better w/o parents.

Also, look at the Honors College class listings (or any classes) and pick a few out. Ask Jami to arrange for you to “sit in” on some of those classes. If you look at the thread of “interesting classes” you might be able to pick a few out.

I don’t know if you’ll be there for Thursday classes, Friday classes, or both, so pick some that will meet at times that will work for you.

Also, be sure to schedule your campus tour ASAP. There’s usually a morning tour and an afternoon tour. Pick the one that works around the classes that you’ll “sit in.” These tours book fast, so book ASAP. You can always change your tour if you need to.

Ask Jami if you can have an appt with Dr. Sharpe. Is always helps to have a “face to face” with Dr. Sharpe. He is a super nice person!

Since you’re also interested in Business, you need to arrange a tour for that. I don’t think that’s included in the regular tour.

However, since you’re also considering Pre-med, you need to visit Shelby and the new Science and Engineering Complex. :)

LOL…what a list. You almost need a customized tour. :)

Yeah, I’ll have a lot to do. But I’m not considering pre-med anymore. Why should I meet with Dr. Sharpe? I don’t know how much I have to ask.

I was hoping to fly in early on a Thursday and then fly out on a Friday afternoon/evening.

If you’re going to apply to CBHP, it can help to have some “face time” with Dr. Sharpe before invites go out.

Are their certain things I should ask or talk to him about? Or just introduce myself?

Do the tours go through the honors dorms?
Can a student be in CBHP and UFE? Should I try to meet Mrs. Bridgers if I get there before the UFE decisions come out?

Yes, there are kids in both UFE and CBHP. It’s different people who do the selection. If you’re going to meet with someone with UFE, I think you should meet with Dr. Morgan. Wellon Bridgers is a doll, but I don’t think she has a lot of say on who gets picked.

As for Dr. Sharpe…you can introduce yourself; ask iwhat kinds of research might a Business Major do; mention your career goals; whatever!

IF he’s not available, meet Mrs. Batson; she’s his right hand person. She’s a former CBHer, and her kids have also gone thru the program. Even if you do meet Dr. Sharpe, do try to meet Mrs. Batson. She’s a good person to have in your corner. :)

Is CBHP “better” than UFE?

*Is CBHP “better” than UFE? *

They’re both so different that I can’t say one is better than the other. I think (perhaps) that for future employment or future acceptances to grad/business/law/med school, that CBHP is better.

However, the UFE kids have a lot of visibility, too. It’s hard to say because UFE is only about 3 years old, so it’s too early to know how its graduates will fare (They’re all smart kids, so they’ll fare well, but it’s yet unknown what kind of “boost” they’ll get from being a member.)

However, CBHP is the oldest undergrad university-wide research program in the United States.
