Waitlist 2015 Thread

Hey everyone! Figured I would start this thread to discuss the waitlist for this year.

Applied Early Sep. and received the an email saying to check the app tracker, and the app tracker basically says that based on the competitiveness of the pool that it has been placed on a waitlist, with a decision being made no longer then April. It links you to this very helpful page that explains why you are on a waitlist, and even though if you are put down, to not give up , but still should focus on your other options

Just wondering what you guys are doing. Going to wait for a decision? Decline the spot on the waitlist? What college you will be going to/pursuing?

I personally made a decision on my college about a month ago and stopped looking into the U of M Twin Cities… Just received an email today so figure I would look xD So I will be declining the waitlist spot so it raises the chances for others.

Some helpful tips to get off the waitlist I have heard:

  • Get some letters of rec.
  • Turn in a waitlist appeal form ( can get it online )
  • Go in for a visit and speak to admissions personally
  • Write a personal letter explaining why you would fit well within the main U and sell yourself
  • Send S1 grades of HS to show you’re continued interest

Hey, thanks for posting! I just got my wait list decision today and I am so terribly upset. However they mentioned to me that over 45,000 students applied for 5,500 undergraduate spots? That’s an acceptance rate of 12%!! How can that be? I applied for Psychology in CLA and I am so terribly upset. This wait is going to mentally torture me. How often do you think wait list people get accepted? Should I call them an ask where I stand on the list? I have been accepted to two other schools, one being very prestigious and amazing, but I have a financial constraint on it and the other is just my safety school, so I was really counting on Minnesota as it fits my budget and my major PERFECTLY. I think I will wait for a decision and do everything I can to get my name into their acceptance list. You got an email? I got an email to check the Application Tracker, nothing else. I am so mentally lost right now.

I have a 31 ACT and got wait listed, I’m extremely confused. I don’t want to wait until April

@Waffles1212‌ Minnesota has 45,000 applicants for 5,500 undergraduate spots and accepts 44% of these applicants. However, only a certain percentage of these accepted students accept the enrollment offer.

@MichlsTheMan97 Yes, thats one of those stupid things that UM does. admission folks take many people even thouh they know they are not coming to UMN, this makes the enrollment rate very low and resulted in declining their national Ranking in US News

I’ve been put on waitlist too and I’m starting to get pissed off…

I applied back in November (US citizen but studying international curriculum abroad) and submitted all the required items before the deadline. During December and January my App tracker was constantly being updated with requests of items such as copies of my o-level certificates and all that stuff which I emailed as soon as I could. However, it took the admissions team around 3 to 4 weeks to process each document I had sent in. Also, I sent my SAT scores in November and they only got processed by late Jan despite me paying an extra $31.

Anyways, around the beginning of February App Track said that my file was complete and is in review. Last week I check and it says that I’ve been put on wait-list, my decision will be posted on 1st April as my application was only just submitted completely early February after the December deadline.

This annoyed the hell out of me so I got with them on phone and explained the situation - the lady said it is most likely that I’ll be considered on time but she’ll get back to me the next day with an email regarding an update. It’s been a week, and no email. Today I called them again and they said they’ll get back to me in one to two working days (yea right).

Honestly not bothered anymore.

This is way unfortunate @IszharS. You might consider filing an appeal. The date stamps on everything would prove your case. If your stats are in the “acceptable range” for your college you might have a slam-dunk case.

Dont turn in any waitlist appeal form unnecessarily this year! It will cost your chances negatively trust me!
Updating yur info through email is wiser

Why would you not use the Waitlist appeal? It can’t hurt. @JANSAT2400‌

I got wait listed, 30 ACT and 4.07 (3.94 unweighted) GPA. Didn’t make sense to me

I got wait listed, 29 ACT, 2210 SAT, and 3.2 GPA and I live right here in Minneapolis, like literally 10 minute walk away too! I sent in a waitlist appeal but a counselor called me to say that they were no longer “accepting waitlist appeals” or whatever that means. I think the UMN just really has messed up admissions process (my friends who had 2.9 GPAs and 21 ACT scores got in).

I was wait listed too. This was my safety school. 34 ACT 2190 SAT. 3.8 UW. 11 AP Classes total, 6 this year.
Athlete, academic teams at school, hispanic wanting to major in math and finance. I still cant believe it. I was rejected by Swarthmore, and the other schools are all ivies. I may be at a community college. I am screwed if Minnesota doesn’t come through

@chicagomike @Therevolutionary Did you apply to Carlson, CBS, or CSE? All 3 of those are their most selective schools. If you didn’t put CLA or another school as your #2, it’s very likely you were postponed due to how to hard it is to get in.

Yeah I applied to CBS and CBS only. I’m not really interested in the CLA because I really want to major in Biochemistry or Microbiology which the CLA does not offer. Really just hope that many people who applied to the CBS don’t take their offers, heh… I mean I don’t honestly think a student who has a 4.0 GPA and 2200 SAT/33 ACT is going to attend the UMNTC unless they’re offered generous financial aid or they didn’t get accepted elsewhere.

S is accepted to CBS and took the spot. At the Dean’s reception he mentioned; 7,700 applicants for 525 seats in the CBS.

Good luck!

I really wish they wouldn’t say things like that because it’s deceptive (and many universities are guilty of this, btw ). CBS accepted way more than 525. Overall U of MN fewer than 30% of students who are accepted actually enroll. I’m sure CBS is higher than a 30% rate but still . . .

Most colleges yield is between 25-40%. I don’t know what’s deceptive about it? 7,700 applicants, 1,400 acceptances. and 520’ish will matriculate. CBS and CSE lead the school in Yield.

The relevant statistic, then, is the 18% who were accepted, not the 7% who actually matriculate. If CBS fully discloses it’s acceptance and matriculation numbers then that’s good - people can do the math on those. But if it says something like “we had 7700 applicants for 525 slots” then it gives the impression that the actual acceptance rate is much lower than it truly is. While some of us understand what’s being said, many others (especially those new to the forums) do not. I’ve seen the mistake made before. Colleges and universities never cease (nor should they) to present themselves in the best light but this one is a bit tricksy, IMHO.

Agree. I never bought into the “higher selectivity = higher quality” But the statement, even at face value, is accurate. 7700 apps for 525 chairs.

Just like UCLA coming out this year saying they had 112,000 applications for a freshman class of 6000

for those rankings affected by selectivity and the colleges chasing those rankings? the common app has been a boon!

My guidance counselor called today and was told all of the spots for CBS are filled unless people decide to go elsewhere. :stuck_out_tongue:
