Waitlisted at Reed for Fall 2009, please advise.

Hello,
I got waitlisted to Reed College for Fall 2009 as a transfer...it was my first choice. I got accepted to Skidmore College, but have heard things about it not being as academically rigorous as other places. I am still waiting on replies from Wheaton, Eugene Lang, and Northeastern.
-What do you think the chances are of me being accepted from the waitlist at this late of a date? I applied late, and just got notification of being waitlisted, but I know the deposit deadline has passed and there probably won't be too many spots opening up.
-Is Skidmore really that bad of a school? I want to major in psychology, but if I went to Reed, I would minor in Creative Writing as well. I am still hoping that will be an option, but it looks like at Skidmore it won't be as they don't have such a major, or even classes for that matter. I want a school with academics like Reed, where I'll be slaving away over my work a good 6 days a week at least and emerge from college feeling satisfied for paying the cost of a Ferrari to attend. Not to mention be prepared for med school.
-I want to go to Reed, and I'm not sure what supplemental materials to send them. I was thinking of a letter of intent, more essays, a research paper, more letters of recommendation, anything I suppose...I really would do anything to go there. Does that sound overboard or is that what they want?

Thank you!

I went to Reed. One good thing about them is that they are really human. If you call and ask about your chances I think you’ll get a straight answer. It sounds like there is nothing wrong with your credentials, just that deadlines had passed.

I am a Skidmore grad and parent, and I can tell you that Skidmore is ny no means a ligthweight choice. Funny, I have always heard Reed referred to as Skidmore of the west. You may be noticing that Skidmore doesn’t have updated rankings with some of the popular college ranking programs. Don’t let this fool you. Skidmore voluntarily chose not to be included in these “beauty contests.” Skidmore is a rare jewel of a liberal arts college. Top notch academics in a creative intellectual environment. Beautiful campus. Amazing college town. The psychology department is very strong, In fact, it was the new student presentation by Prof. Sheldon Soloman that convinced my daughter to go, even though she is not a Psych. major.

Wheaton and Northeastern are not in the same league

How are your finances? As in does your FA look like you come from a situation where your EFC would be super high? If you read on the Parent’s Forum, there is an article about Reed College having to take record number of full-pay students. My guess is that as Reed looks at its transfer wait-list they will lean toward taking full-pay students and shy away from families/students that have very low EFCs.

Reed and Skidmore, IMO, are quite different. Skidmore is a more creative environment, Reed’s more intellectually gruelling.

Reed will accept you off the wait list if you can pay your way and don’t need financial aid. There was just a HUGE article about it on the front page of the New York Times, check it out

yeah I saw that article, i emailed them ASAP to tell them I would waive all aid…not sure if that was wise or not, but I would love to go there.

thank you very much for that information, I am so glad to hear that! Skidmore is probably where I am going if I don’t get accepted to Reed.

Ability to pay will improve your chances, but does not mean you are in. Reed is still a very selective school.
