Waitlisted & the Statistical Chances of Getting In

Just in case, you never know.

Indiana University-Bloomington Waitlisted, % that get in?

lowermorelandmom

I think that the "Number of Wait list Students Admitted" is the number from the wait list that actually attend. (A better Title would probably be "Number of wait-listed Students Admitted & Matriculated")

The Colleges probably have to offer admittance to a larger number on the wait list than finally attend, because some of those on the wait list will have decided to go to another school while they were waiting for an answer from the College.

Early Williams College Common Data Sets broke the numbers out in more detail.
<a href="http://www.williams.edu/admin/provost/ir/%5B/url%5D">http://www.williams.edu/admin/provost/ir/</a>
2000
Number of qualified Applicants Placed on Wait List.............NA
Number Accepting a Place on the Wait List......................NA
Number of wait-listed Students Admitted.........................48
Number of wait-listed Students Admitted & Matriculated.....37
Total Class Size 529
7 % of Class Came from the wait list

1998
Number of qualified Applicants Placed on Wait List............956
Number Accepting a Place on the Wait List.....................515
Number of wait-listed Students Admitted.........................42
Number of wait-listed Students Admitted & Matriculated.....28
Total Class Size 537
5.2 % of Class Came from the wait list

The Williams 1998 and the 2000 Stats give us information that I have not seen on other colleges Common Data Sets. Apparently 14 of the 42 offered admission off the wait-list turned them down in 1998 and 11 of the 48 offered admission off the wait-list turned them down in 2000.

Other colleges also have to offer admission to more students on their wait list than actually attend. But this is not info that is asked for on the Common Data Set and these numbers are usually not released by the colleges.

In any event this would not greatly change the chances of getting in from the wait list. Colleges go to the wait list to fill out their class. They will only offer admittance from the wait list until they fill the number of spaces they have open after RD. (If the first 28 students called by Williams in 1998 said yes, Williams would not have needed to call the next 14 students.) The significant number is how many spaces they have to fill. not how many applicants they have to call.

They have their Common Data Set Posted
<a href="http://www.indiana.edu/%7Ebudu/cds/cds034/G1400bl.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.indiana.edu/~budu/cds/cds034/G1400bl.pdf</a></p>

But it says that they do not use a wait list.

Lots of other info there.

In 2004 for the class of 08 Williams took over 50 students (approx 10%) off of it's waitlist

sybbie719

Hi, you are correct <a href="http://www.williams.edu/admin/provost/ir/2004-05cds.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.williams.edu/admin/provost/ir/2004-05cds.pdf</a></p>

I was answering lowermorelandmom's question and was only talking about Williams because they had revealed how many they had contacted to offer admission from the wait list in 1998 and 2000. I havn't seen that information listed on any other Common Data Set, posted by them or any other College.

rich73cas,

No problem. I think that it is really great that you are posting links to the office of institutional research and the common data set for the various schools.

They contain a wealth of information regarding freshman admission an the savvy applicant for next year would be well served to read this information as well as the website info on his/her prospective school and a realistic picture of where they stand in comparison to the admitted candidates (it would also eliminate some of these what are my chances, because they would have the objective criterias for admission).

Even if someone is has not been waitlisted, if they have another child or sibling going through the process, this thread is worth saving.

Hello, I'm interested in your opinion and that of others re the following. What do schools expect for enrollment/commitment turn around time if one is fortunate to be accepted from wait list? S feels a need to visit the waitlist school again to take a class etc.(has a good back up). With the distance don't think it will happen unless accepted. Although he will jump for joy, we can understand dilema.

vested
The Schools that are going to their wait lists will want to have a answer quickly from the applicants they offer admission to. They are trying to fill vacancies in their class. I doubt that you would get more than a few days to a week to make a decision. (But I have no first hand knowledge of this. Perhaps someone who has will comment.)
