I would love to hear more about pre-med at Wake. Thank you.
Newdeac1 certainly has better info, but my daughter has had great support from a pre-health advisor already. Basically there is a four year track and the three year Early Assurance Program.
There are a lot of students that start out premed freshman year. To get into medical school, you can major in anything, but you need to take certain classes to qualify for admission. Vet school is a different kettle of fish, and each school has different prerequisites. Many overlap, but you would need to refer to the AAVMC for each school. Overall, it is very competitive. To get into medical from Wake, students should aim for a 3.7 or higher to be competitive. There are ample opportunities to participate in research.
In can be tough to take a semester abroad and still be able to complete the prerequisites. My oldest daughter is graduating this May from Wake and will be going to UPenn for vet school in the fall.
My middle daughter is a freshman applied math major who is premed.
Accepted! I am so incredibly happy especially after the BC waitlist!
I thought Wake was not able to do in person tours at this time?
I thought so too but my D got the email invite this afternoon for admitted student in person tours. We are booked for 11:00 am on Friday.
We did a tour last Friday. Can’t go inside any buildings like you could the previous Feb. About 45-60 mins around the campus.
Not sure if anyone responded, but we use Gmail and all of their emails are going to my promotions folder. Hope this helps.
@ILMom21 and @jpga13 Can you share the link you were able to schedule a tour? Also do they offer tours on weekdays?
Oops. Link changed. One min. Ok, mine doesn’t go to the tours anymore it goes to other events for admitted students. Maybe @ILMom21 has the new link.
The tours we had available were on Friday and Monday but someone else said they added Saturday. The tours were scheduled all day long. There was a little swag wagon at the front of the admissions building with Wake gear to purchase. There is also a Deacon Shop in the Mall. If you need any restaurant ideas we visited many the parents recommended and they were great. We stayed downtown a couple nights and by the school a couple nights but it’s only 2-3 miles between the two.
Thank you! When you visited what were your thoughts on Winston Salem?
We really enjoyed downtown and the surrounding area. Downtown had great restaurants and shops and then there were some tucked into little neighborhoods here and there. Behind campus is Reynolda Village which is really nice and also has some really good shops and restaurants. The students can walk on a path from campus there. We ate way too much food trying to hit all the recommended places to eat. I almost flew myself up yesterday to get some biscuits from Krankies. Wake downtown is also a nice complex. The university is straight up the parkway from downtown and only take 5-8 mins. Campus is gated which is also nice.
Here is the link from my D’s email. Hopefully it still works. https://apply.admissions.wfu.edu/portal/admittedstudenteventsRD
Looks like our tour will be same. Walking tour outside only for about an hour.
Can you tell us the places you ate??
Downtown we had Krankies and Young Cardinal Cafe for breakfast. In Reynolda Village we ate ate VIllage Tavern, May Way, Penny Cafe & Crepe Shop, and Dough-Joes which is a donut shop. We stopped at Bobby Boy Bakery a mile or two up the road from campus. They have a sandwich of the day, some sweets, fresh bread, and a few other items. Right near Bobby Boy Bakery is Fratellis Italian Steakhouse which was also recommended but we ran out of meals to eat before we got there. Every place was ate was excellent. The parents group on FB keeps PDF files with recommended restaurants, car service places, doctors, care package places, and on and on. If you need anything or have a question, someone will get back to you with recommendations usually within 30 mins or so. I’ve been very impressed with the group.
Thanks so much. Wake is sneaking up as a contender for my daughter. We live about an hour away and she wanted to go farther, but Wake is looking good!
Mine wanted to get away too. They applied to UGA as a safety and Emory just to appease me but made it clear they wanted to go away for school.
We were fortunate enough to do a big college visit road trip Feb 2020 right before everything shut down. On that trip we visited Emory, Vandy, OSU, Cincy, CWR, Penn State, UPenn, Princeton, Duke, UNC, and Wake. When she we visited Wake she just knew that was her home. She was also fortunate enough to get accepted ED, so our college application process was short and sweet, and we had a fun road trip.
We’ve been really happy with how they have handled Covid and all the great things they have been doing for the students to help keep their sanity. Some parents thought they were too strict with Covid, and others not enough. Currently they have started giving vaccines on campus so hopefully this Fall will be smooth sailing. The communications we receive, she receives, and even the grandparents receive are excellent.
My son received an email inviting him for an in person tour as an accepted student, so it seems they are doing that.
