Want to Transfer to Notre Dame? Let me Help.

Hi,

I remember this time last year I was frantically worrying about transferring to a new school. Somehow, I was accepted into the University of Notre Dame. With a great financial aid package, I decided to move from LA to beautiful South Bend, IN.

Last year, CC was such a useful source because each member contributed to this community. Well, I want to help in any way I can this year.

If you are interested in transferring to ND, and I highly recommend you do as it's an amazing school, please feel free to ask any questions you might have.

Warm regards,
B.K.

Hey thanks for doing this.

What was you major?
GPA?
Did you finish all pre-reqs before you transfered?

I am majoring in Film and Television. I came in as a Political Science/Econ major, but I quickly changed.

My GPA when I applied was a 3.86, and 3.904 when I was accepted.

And no, I didn’t finish all the pre-reqs, but they were very understanding. Either you have to take a class during the summer (to fulfill those reqs, for me I needed a math and a science class) or you have to take it your first semester of your tenure at ND. They were going to rescind my offer when I told them I couldn’t take the summer school classes because it was past the deadline, they just said if I promise to take those classes my first semester, I’d be fine.

Where you able to have a smooth transition as a transfer? What about housing? As a transfer were you able to stay on campus?

Ah yes another LA person. I am currently at LMU (film production major). What do you think of Notre Dame’s film program?

Nafmom - the transition couldn’t have been smoother. Not only were there 100+ transfers in my class, we were placed mostly in the same classes (because we had to pick the classes that were leftover). Students are incredibly welcoming, and intrigued, by the transfer students. The administration say you are “guaranteed” housing your second semester of your first year (because almost half the junior class travels abroad each year). Realistically, there is room for everyone in the first month, but people turn it down because they signed a lease. I was offered housing the first day I got there, but couldn’t accept because I signed a lease. When I found a person to replace me, there was still room for me a month in. Now I live in Alumni Hall (which is the best dorm in terms of location and brotherhood). Overall, the transition has been incredibly smooth and I couldn’t be happier with my situation.

STLtransfer - I don’t really know yet because I declared the major a couple of months ago. So far, I really like it because of all the opportunities that are offered to us. I can give you a better answer hopefully this time next year. All I can say is, we have great alumni base in LA (especially in film production) and I’m close to securing an internship in a TV studio this summer.

Benjskim - thanks for your reply. We are currently in the decision process of where my daughter will start this coming fall. She has been accepted at ND as well as other schools that are offering her excellent merit scholarships. This is making the decision very tough since so far it looks like she will not get much aid at ND. We are crossing our fingers since ND is her dream school. If the aid does not work out I was thinking about the possibility of starting out somewhere else for a year or two and then transferring in. Our concern is the first year of studies program requirements. What are your thoughts?

What was your highest math level course? I am taking CalI this semester. I found on the ND website that the applicants who apply to economics major must complete 2 semester of calculus. So I decided not to apply to ND.

And what was your previous school? I just want to know whether it was a 2 year or 4 year institution. I am attending a community college. I heard that those selective schools including ND prefer 4 year universities to community colleges.

I would appreciate your answers.

Skim 319 - My highest level was Calc 1. I applied as a political science major, then changed to economics the first day of orientation (in hindsight, should have saved a step and went directly to film lol). I took Calc 2 my first semester here. I came from Sacramento State, which is a 4-year university. And yes, it is true that ND prefers students from 4-year universities, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have a shot. As long as you have a solid GPA and test scores, and a stellar reason for wanting to attend ND, everyone has a shot.

Nafmom - I think going to a cheaper institution is a great idea. However, speaking on a strict social basis, freshman year is definitely when you make bonds and get introduced to the “greek-like” dorms through special dorm events. I had no problem socially as a transfer (because us transfers are practically a family), but if your daughter cares deeply about those kinds of things, I would almost say the experience is worth the extra cost.

Thanks benjskim

Did you take some major related courses? I took the principle of micro and macroecon courses but my community college doesn’t offer higher level courses such as intermediate economics or econometrics.

Thanks Benjskim - that is what is making our decision so tough! I am hoping ND comes through with at least some type of financial award. That is what we are praying for. The next few weeks are going to be very stressful. Thanks for your feedback.

Skim319 - I didn’t take any upperlevel courses before I came in, just the basics like what you took. But when I started Intermediate Macro, I knew economics wasn’t the right fit for me.

Nafmom - no problem, good luck! Let me know how things go.

Hey benjskim - I’m not sure if you’ll be able to answer this, but if you can, great! I applied as a transfer for this fall as a Program of Liberal Studies major, and in my essay I mentioned how I’m interested in either double majoring in Political Science or Peace Studies (now I’m thinking of majoring in Political Science with a supplemental major/minor in Peace Studies.) Anyhow, I know that the PLS major has a very specific curriculum - do you know if that will work against me getting into ND, or if it will be very hard to me to change my major if I do? I understand if you have no idea about this random question!

I’m currently a high school senior and hope to transfer after freshman year of college. Should I look up pre-reqs (for transfers) of colleges I will be applying to before I choose my courses for college? I have no idea how I should be picking classes, or if the fact that I’m going to transfer should affect my class choice at all. Thanks in advance for your help!

colette - changing your major is super easy. In regards to PLS, I can’t give you a specific answer to that question. Apologies!

nocrackup - give ND an email and tell them your situation, they can refer you to the right resource.

Thanks!

benjskim - Quick Update - My daughter received no aid from ND. This was very disappointing and makes the decision so tough since she has a few full scholarships at other schools including other private universities. Not sure if she will be able to attend ND which is he dream school. Maybe we will have to seriously look at the transfer option. Do you think that if she was already accepted once, it will be easier to be accepted as a transfer student?

Nafmon - I think so. Even though I haven’t heard of many transfer students who turned down ND to come back a year or two after, I’m sure it’s a viable option if finances are key.

Thanks for your reply. This has been such a stressful decision. Thanks again.

Didn’t get in to ND (dream since I was 5, huge fan of the school, love my Irish, blah blah blah) and am going to UF for a year before hopefully transferring.

A question you may or may not know… If UF accepts a 4 for an AP class for credit but ND takes only 5 as a freshman, that credit wont transfer to ND right?

Jcold9 - I don’t think that credit will transfer to ND. The same with any dual enrollment classes. My daughter has the same issue.
