Wash U decisions are posted

Another waitlisted-er here.
Not my top choice.
Congrats to all those accepted.

Wow if anything, Dante should've been in. I think WUSTL denies qualified people who aren't interested in it. There's no way this many qualified applicants should get denied from any school

^ Yep, I was also in the stanford slaughter. Forgot to post my stats earlier, here they are:

Decision: Waitlisted
GPA: 4.0 Home School, 3.87 for the 74 credits of college classes I've taken
SAT: 2320; 800 CR, 770 M, 750 W
SAT II: 800 Physics, 800 Literature, 800 Chemistry, 780 Math II
Excellent recs, essay, etc.
I was also offered a paid trip to visit (I did not take them up on the offer).

Interestingly, I have been accepted by all my non-common app schools (Columbia, USC, ASU Honors College), and of my common app applications I have been waitlisted, haha.

Accepted, but not attending.

Thank God lol ^^^, I got wait listed as well. I am pretty upset to be honest because this was not even my first choice. That leaves me little hope to gain acceptance at my other schools. I cannot say why I was turned down. Maybe, they wanted their applicants to show interest. Perhaps, they predict qualified applicants will turn down acceptances, so they just wait listed all those who seemed very qualified (Ivy league material) and showed no interest toward the school. Just a prediction.

Someone said that this could just be a tool. I hope so; they maybe using this to see which applicants have an interest at the school (among those who showed no interest). They probably purposely stated you will get your wait list decision by June 30 to try to separate the faithful from those w/ no interest.

Does anyone know why they say joining the waitlist can be a difficult decision? It is not binding or anything, right?

Wow, lolcatz, I cannot believe you were wait listed as well! It really must be an "interest" test.

my S also waitlisted. Although it was his 7th choice, he is really ****ed.
He has SAT (2370), SATII (800 math, 780 bio, 730 chem), 96-97 average, National Merit Finalist, 14 years of violine with all state invite, etc.etc. He probably did not show a strong enough desire for WU.

The letter says: "We hope there will be financial assistance available for students admitted from the wait list."
It sounds like they are short in $. This by itself puts WU on no consideration list.

OKay, so i was waitlisted too....was EVERYBODY waitlisted???

Waitlisted. But congrats to everyone who's in! I'm so proud of you guys!!!

V123-"Oh well, this kind of surprised me, but I don't know if I would have attended WashU if accepted. This was the only school that wan not need-blind during the admissions process and I believe that played a factor. "

That explains it. My other children will not even look at this school twice. Should have know before all this.

It's so bizarre who WashU just waitlists EVERYONE! I was accepted but a lot of you waitlist-ed-ers seem to have stats that are more impressive than mine!... the admissions office is mysterious.

From what I hear, if you send a letter to the admissions office or give them a call expressing your interest in the school, this can potentially move you closer to the top of the wait list (I know a bunch of people who got in off the waitlist). Good luck to all those waitlisted, and congrats to everyone who was accepted!!!

Waitlisted, oh well..

GPA: 105.67
Ranking: 1/280
SAT I: 2350
SAT II: 2230

Team Captain (XC, Winter, Spring Track)
Drum Major (Marching Band)
VP (Habitat)
a ton of community service
Etc..
=/

Guys, PLEASE note if you applied for FA or not.

I applied for a huge amount of FA, so that could have something to do with it. my efc = 0

Was anyone rejected? lol

How were you accepted to Columbia if you applied SCEA to Stanford? Columbia's decisions don't come out until March 31...

I received a likely letter.

i really don't think that they take interest into account as much as people think they do.

the school is known for providing free trips to campus for many students who they admit. they want to get as many people as possible to visit campus (whether it's before they applied, or after they were accepted for the first time). simply applying to a school is showing interest. not everyone can visit. you can also show interest through emails, phone calls, alumni interviews, or meeting with a rep when they visit your city/high school.

once they bring you to campus after you are accepted, they'll sell you on the school and you'll get to learn a lot about them. the most important thing in the admissions world is a college's Yield --- of the people they do accept, who will likely enroll. it doesn't matter when you visit... as long as they get you to come to campus at some point, either before you apply or after you are accepted.

if you go through the RD Decisions thread, many of the Acceptances were for kids who didn't visit. People can say all they want that "it's because i didn't show any interest" or "because i was too qualified". There's no formula for getting accepted. In the end, it's a school that accepts somewhere around 17-20% of the applicants, and their decisions are not going to make everyone happy.

For the "overqualified" part, that doesn't make any sense. There is no way that Wash U waitlists/rejects "overqualified students" and is still able to maintain average SAT/GPA/class rank at the same level of HYPS. If you claim that you are "over" qualified, then why on earth would you apply to a school filled with people who aren't as good as you are? You're not over-qualified. You are just as qualified as everyone else - plain and simple.

Anyone who applied to Wash U and didn't get in just needs to realize that highly selective admissions is inherently random, and there can't be one identifiable reason why you weren't accepted to give you closure. The only thing that you can get closure from is that these applicant pools are filled with qualified people just like you, and they can't accept all of them. You're probably coming from a high school where you are a top kid and are used to success at every stage of your life and you put so much work into everything you do --- but these applicant pools are filled with 20,000+ people who are just like you!! You MUST have realized before you applied that there was an 80% likelihood that you WON'T get in.

Just move on :) You'll find a school where you fit in and you'll be happy, and it very well could be another highly selective school. I don't mean for that to come across as brutally honest, sarcastic, or elitist... but, you'll really do yourself a favor by not inventing reasons why you weren't accepted, and instead just know that you're probably a super kid who's going to end up at another super school. I was actually Wait Listed by Wash U when I applied and am now happily attending at another just-as-good school (and my dad went to Wash U and I visited campus... can't tell you how much time I WASTED trying to figure out my wait list decision!! In the end, it never affected my view that Wash U is a a great school and I'm glad that I applied in the first place)

keepitcoolidge: Thank you for your reassuring post. I got accepted. But seeing many people who said they're "over qualified" or they "don't show enough interest", I originally felt like the only reason why I got accepted was because I requested WashU's viewbook (I am an international, so I did not get a chance to visit).

Yay I'm in! Totally didn't expect this!

Son got it, but needs a nice financial package to consider going.
