Washington Square

I was talking with an NYU alum today and she told me to try to stay away from Washington Square b/c it can get pretty shady- what's your take on the area?? I know this IS the center of NYU, and when I was there last April it looked nice enough, so I was wondering......

Whoa...I'd venture this alum was fairly old. The area is very nice by any definition. Back in the day like a couple decades ago, Wash Sq. was shady, but not anymore (especially after the 90's when Rudy Guiliani cleaned house with the riff raff in the area). NYU owns almost everything around Washington Square, and the Greenwich Village area is one of most affluent in New York.

I agree with JW.

I remember when I was visiting NYU one time, my dad said I couldn't go there at night because he had had a bad exprience there. But granted, it was a while back.

But if you go there now... I don't think you'll have too much of a problem...

not at all. washington square is very alive at night with people walking dogs and strolling in the park. not shady at all. it's one of the nicest areas in the village.

Earlier this week I spent a day and evening at NYU/Washington Square on a college visit. It was a very pleasant experience. It's a nice area.
