water

is there some sort of water dispenser in the dorms, hot and cold water, or do we buy our own water..? because buying it seems inconvenient

Yes -- the residential halls have water fountains located on every floor, and the suites/plazas have a few water fountains in the lobby area. Most students in the suites/plazas buy bottled water anyways, however.

flopsy:

Is there a place on campus to buy cheap bottled water?

campus and cheap generally does not go together :p

Nope -- all the bottled water on campus is expensive.
You have to head into Westwood to buy cheap, bulk bottled water.

Figures!

If misery loves company, the store on campus at UCSD is way overpriced also. I think they buy the stuff at Costco a few miles away, multiply the price by 1.5-2.0 and sell it to students.

i thought the water was reasonably priced at ackerman market.. anyway i know the vending machines are ridicolously overpriced, and they use aquafina aka tap water

costco water FTW! just stock up on a couple cases. ;)

I seriously second water from costco if you

A- have access to costco
and
B- have a way to get water from costco to ucla.

But really, it's like $13 for 28 giant bottles of Arrowhead. Cheaper for the costco brand, but the bottles are smaller and it doesnt taste as good to me. Other options, also.

I suggest making friends with people who have cars and costco memberships asap.

would there, by any chance, access to hot drinking water? or is the only other way buy a microwave and microwave it?

nope. get a hot water boiler thing (i think theyre "illegal" so you'd have to hide it during room inspections). there about $10 and heat up water in like 30 seconds. another way would be one of those regular drip-style coffee makers. just put water in with no coffee (those are also "illegal"). microwaves (also "illegal" unless its a micro-fridge) will work too, but i think microwaves take too long to heat water.

I don't think the electric water boilers are illegal.. at least that's what my unsure RAs (two different houses) said when they raffled it off at the end of the year.

Electric water boilers are allowed; coffee makers are not allowed, however.
