At the risk of being called an alarmist…I just looked at some early forecasts for the weekend and they are of concern if you’re flying into NYC. A storm is scheduled to arrive late Friday and dump a foot or more of snow from Washington up to Boston (where we’ll be coming from), with the storm slated to wind down late Saturday.
The three warm weather schools in the south that have highly regarded programs are Elon, Florida State and Texas State, but there are s host of other southern schools that have MT programs, including U. of Alabama, U. of Miami, Savannah College of Art & Design and Coastal Carolina.
Every winter, there are awful weather situations at one (or more) of the Unifieds, and at on-campus auditions (ice storm at Elon, anyone?). Since NYC is the first Unified, I imagine the professors flying in to run the auditions are well aware of the weather forecast and will come in earlier if they have to, but most of them will already be there when the storm hits. It’s harder for them if there is a blizzard in Chicago and they need to leave NYC Unifieds to fly to Chicago Unifeds…no wiggle room. We flew through a blizzard (got the last plane out from the east coast) to go to OCU’s audition a few years ago…tons of east coast kids had cancelled. When that happens, the schools typically allow video auditions in the place of in person auditions. But I do not think any of the NYC Unified auditions will be delayed or cancelled. In extreme NYC weather, the buses sometimes stop running, and the cabs may be hard to come by, but the subway is always going. And, you can always walk from your hotel to the studio. Download the free app Embark NYC, and it shows you which subway to take to get from place A to place B. NYC subways are safe and easy. If you are driving in, get there Friday before the storm hits. Break legs!
I’m glad we booked our flight in for Thursday…not excited about the bitter cold and potential for difficulty getting home Sunday, but I think it will be worth the risk. My friends who live up there remind me that the city knows what it’s doing when it snows, unlike my hometown…
FYI, we were planning on staying uptown with friends, but in an abundance of caution I was just able to book the New Yorker, across the street from the auditions, at a fairly reasonable rate for Friday and Saturday nights. Cheaper for Friday, and if you have AAA, definitely ask for the discount.
@WTXMom You’ll be fine. As a native - once you’re in the city the weather almost never impedes anything. It’s the icy roads in the suburbs and beyond which are more beholden to Mother Nature. We are a commuter train ride away and heading in tomorrow for the first of six over four days. Staying in the city through Sunday, near subway lines and not concerned about the weather at all. My daughter and I are feeling ready!
Good idea! We are coming from Boston- originally planned on staying with our in laws in NJ, but after hearing about the storm, we decided to get a hotel in the city. No rooms available at the New Yorker, but got a room at Hotel 32 32… Seems nice… it’s affordable, and only a mile from Unifieds. Break a leg everyone!
Blizzard watch upgraded to a blizzard warning overnight! Are we crazy to still go to Unifieds this weekend in NYC??? Hopefully restaurants will be open! Having visions of being stranded in NYC wth no food and trudging through snow uptown to Fordham audition! Lol!
Yes, just bring high waterproof boots, long coat/jacket, hat, gloves, scarf, some energy bars, and maybe a large backpack. NYC will not shut down, and you can walk pretty much anywhere; it just may be unpleasant.
Just heard NYC might declare a state of emergency… If that happens, do you think Unifieds might be cacncelled? My daughter is auditioning at Unifieds for Michigan on Saturday and Ithaca Sunday… And Fordham at their campus on Sunday…
