Weekend on the Square

My DD will be attending Weekend on the Square next week with her uncle who lives in NYC - because of a scheduling conflict I am unable to attend. Can anyone comment on how worthwhile this event is and is it really a good introduction to NYU?

Check out the schedule on the website

Does anyone know whether or not most people will be bringing their parents along? The website is ambiguous about the subject.

All of the students I know will be with their parents or a family member during Weekend on the Square.

We did not go last year. I asked her about it this year (as a freshman) whether she would recommend it. She said the kids last year who went had a great time and some of them are still friends with the people they met there. We went another day as to me, it seemed more like a street party and open house then something you would learn a lot from.

You definitely don’t have to bring your parents, but many people do because it’s a fun experience for both students and their parents, especially if they’ve never been to NYC and/or NYU before. I didn’t bring my parents, I just brought my friends. Not sure if that was allowed but I felt no need to bring my parents, who used to live in Greenwich Village and had no desire to attend.

You won’t be missing a ton if you don’t go, but people who never did a campus tour would probably find it entertaining. They put on a little show with some performances (dancers, comedy, etc.), give you a free t-shirt, and talk at you for awhile. Basically they just brag about all the great things about NYU to try and get you excited about your upcoming NYU experience. Kind of like a long pep rally. I wouldn’t say most people make permanent (or any) friends there - it’s like Welcome Week, you might meet a lot of people, but you’ll probably never speak to them or even see them again due to the sheer amount of NYU students.

In summary - it’s fun but it’s not necessary to attend. I wouldn’t go extremely out of my way to go.

It turns out that my daughter was not able to make it to NYU for the Weekend on the Square as her flight to LGA on Friday was cancelled - she sat on a plane for close to three hours and the airline then cancelled her flight.

In any case, can a parent/student who attended give me their impressions? Thanks in advance.
