What are a lot of the students like at Florida Atlantic University/ FAU?

I am transferring from Loyola University of Chicago this coming spring semester after i finish one last semester in Chicago. I have a vacation home in Boca Raton and i could stay there, which would be awesome. Plus, who doesn’t love living near a beach!? So i was just curious, what are the students like? Predominately middle class? White?

I don’t go there but I grew up in that area & in know a fair few who have attended. I would say a drawback is that it seems to be a commuter campus, & thus takes away from the more traditional college campus feel. Everyone I know that’s attended have been white, middle class, individuals from A or B ranked public high schools. Palm Beach county overall though is more diverse & cultural than most Florida counties.

I love this question! As someone who lives a block away from FAU, who attended elementary school at a school on its campus, whose grandfather taught there for over 30 years, whose mother got 3 degrees there and who knows dozens of current and former students, I am extremely familiar with FAU.

I would say FAU students are similar to students at other large public universities. The majority of students are typical college age although a significant percentage are a little older, in their mid- to late-20s, with a smattering of nontraditional returning students. The students are almost all locals and most are commuter students, although the number of residential students seems to be increasing and the school just built a huge new dorm. A fair number are foreign students, many from Haiti, Mexico, Central America, Colombia, and Brazil. A good percentage has transferred from community colleges, especially Palm Beach State College.
