What are chances of Transfering to U. of Washington

Hello all,

I am currently a student at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale Illinois. I am in my second year and would like to transfer to the University of Washington in Seattle.

I am a 24 year old hispanic male. I am a high school dropout with a GED. I have lived in IL all of my life. My high school transcript is pretty bad and really not worth talking about. I believe my high school GPA was around 0.1 and I am being generous. My sister is currently in grad school and neither of our parents went to college. My mother is also a high scool dropout.

I am currently pursuing an "Administration of Justice" major at SIUC in Carbondale IL. I have decided to change my major and to focus my schooling on an "Arabic Studies" type of degree with a minor in Business.

My GPA at SIUC is 2.889 for now. I hope to raise it after the Spring 2006 semester. But I do wish to apply for the U of Washington now in hopes of getting in for the Fall of 2006 semester.

I have never taken an ACT/SAT test because SIU did not require one and according to the U of Washington admissions councilor. I can take one if need be but have not signed up for it yet.

I also have to submit a personal statement but I think I will be alright with that. I have led an interesting life so I will tell them about it.

Here is copy of my transcript:

If any other information is needed to help give me a better assessment please dont be afraid to ask.

Bump.

Someone please give me an idea as I am somewhat desperate.

dude everyone's asleep in the US right now lol. I'm in korea so i can respond but i actually have no idea of the caliber of Uwash.

Same here.

Take an SAT and let us know how ya do.

I never sleep.

I never took anything like that and do not really have a way to prepare for it? What would be one of the bettter ways to prepare for it?

I am putting a lot of personal history in my Personal Statement. Basically I was a gangbanger and got out of the gang life. I worked a bunch of crappy jobs and decided to go back to school. I dont know what calibre of school it is either. It is one of the better schools in the country is what I am told. I believe it is similar to the U. of Illinois would be my guess.

bump now to top

Gatman:

You're personal history is amazing and you and your parents should be very proud of your accomplishments! I really hope you take time to mentor others that are in the situation you were in...our country really needs more people like you! :)

As for your chances at Washington, I would really try to get the GPA up to a solid 3.0 and kick butt in your college algebra class (since you withdrew last semester, it would be great to show you can kick butt now!). Also, do you have a reason for failing Biology? It looks pretty bad, but is obviously the main thing keeping your GPA down. Any chance you could take that over next semester and replace the grade to raise your GPA further? I don't like giving out chances per se, just advice on how to market yourself the best way to insure you get the best possible outcome.

Good luck with everything and please, feel free to PM me if you would like any advice now or in the future! :D

I did retake Biology. The first time it was "Zool 115" and the second time it was "PLB 115". It was the same class but it is a requirement for both Plant Biology Majors and Zoology Majors. I am hoping they could count it as a mistake on their part and erase the failed Biology course. The reason I dropped out of the algebra was I did not get the book until the 6th week of class. I ordered it online and did not have the funds to buy another one for full price at the campus bookstore. (I got it for $30 online and the local stores wanted $90-$110 for it!!!) I dropped the class and was told it would not be held against me. I am taking it this semester. I plan to raise the GPA above 3.0 this semester but would like to apply for the fall semester.

If I were you, I'd try to raise the gpa a bit.

I am trying. I should be able to drop the failed biology class after I speak with the professor. That should hopefully improve it.

Well I sent out my application. I also sent my High school transcripts (I was 734th out of 760 for my class rank!!!) And I had a GPA lower than a 1.0 for my entire high school career. Wow! I hope my personal statement is good enough. This semester looks like it will be a good semester for me at SIUC and I should be able to raise the GPA up some.
