What are my chances at Irvine?

I'm out of state (coming all the way from Pennsylvania), however right now my SATs are not that impressive at all. I only have a 1700 with all 3 combined, although that was my first time ever taking them, I plan on taking the SATs, ACT, and SAT Subject tests within the upcoming months. My GPA is about a 3.76 and I'm in the top 5% in my class. I was just wondering what are my chances? I have alot of friends and family out in California and would love to see the west coast again.

My GPA Junior year was a little over a 4 becuase of weighted classes.
This year is my senior year and I plan on taking
Antomy II
AP Chem
AP Physics
AP Calc
AP English
as well as a couple of other classes. What do you think i need to improve on, and do you think if i do improve on [insert what i need improved here] i have a chance at getting into the college? help!

Out of state makes it much harder.

Really study for those SATs. Aim for 2000-2100. Cram grammar; its the easiest to cram and do well on because its just a set of rules you need to follow.

When doing reading passages, do the questions AS you read through the passage. For example, if the question asks, "On line 46... blah blah" then read a bit past 46 then answer the question. Leave the general questions until later or do them after you've read most of it. You will forget the information if you try to read the passage first. You can read the questions first, but I don't recommend it because time is a huge factor in the reading section.

For vocab, look over some etymology; root words, prefixes, and suffixes help immensely. Of course use context but look at the TONE and CONNOTATION of the words. Looking at tone always nets me questions where I am trying to decide between two words. Something that might make sense but has a tone that doesn't really fit will never be the right answer.

For the essay, try making a topic list a few days before the SAT (mine was a bunch (maybe 5-6) of books I've read in English class). Make them diverse enough so you will be able to use them as a basis for any prompt they throw at you. My friend told me to do that the night before I took the SAT, so I went to sparknotes and refamiliarized myself with a few books I had read in the past and did significantly better than I did on my first sitting for the essay portion (I suck at writing).

As you can see, I think a significantly higher score on the SAT will be the easiest way to drastically increase your chances for UCI. I doubt anything under 1900 will get into UCI out of state, but I don't really know.

What are your extracurriculars?

At the moment, I'd say your chances are 10% unless you show some spectacular ECs because you're out of state. If you were in state then I'd say 70%. Increase your score and your chances will shoot up dramatically. Don't trust me too much though. GL on the SAT.

Ahh well thanks for being completely honest with me, thats cool. Well I have this SAT book which I just started today. I plan on doing aobut 1-2 hours every other day untill im done taking my SATS ( i think im going to take them to more times atleast). Thanks for the tips also, those are actually really good ideas. My extracirriculars are, Tennis, Soccer, Drama Club, French Club, and Theatre (although i dont think i want to pursue any of those out there, i just wanna focus on studying).

Also which do you think look better, SAT or ACT?

It doesn't matter at all, although if you don't do well on the SAT, it seems its easier to do well on the ACT. Also, are you sure your GPA is a UC GPA? It seems a bit low. Study for the standardized tests, and you should be holding down the fort for the other stuff. GL!

I heard ACT is easier. Never took it though.

I did better on my ACT's and used that score to get in.
I was about in the same situation last year but I got a 29 on my act's which ended up being equivalent to a high 1900's score. But I was in state so that probably helped me out some.
Try both and see how you do.

Cool guys thanks a lot for all the tips, input, and info... Im taking SAT and ACT in the up coming months... Thanks guys again

goober, what was your SAT score? I was wondering because I want to see if I can improve my score by taking the ACT instead of taking the SAT again.

I got a 1630 on my SAT's, writing sections always killed me and the science part of the ACT's helped me so much.
I got in to bio sci with a 3.8 something and pretty weak ec's. Just write a killer essay just to be sure though.

MyJohn04 I took both the SAT and ACT for the first time in June and I found the SAT to be MUCH easier. I only got a 27 on the ACT and I got a 2000 on the SAT.

Oh ic, thats a little discouraging but, I figure, I never even studied or reviewed at all for the SATs that i took last year. So this year, I'm starting to review stuff now, almost every day and plus once i get back to school we'll be reviewing some things from last year so i should be set for math. I'm also reviewing for English alot, like learning prefixes and suffixes like someone told me to above... So with a little bit of luck and a whole lot of work, I think i can get the grade.

Yeah I didn't study for the SAT or ACT the first time. I basically just wanted to see what the tests were like and actually study when I took the tests the 2nd time. Now I'm only gonna take the SAT again, not the ACT because I think that'll be a waste of time. I'm studying math now (I did the worst on it) and I'm doing much better on practice tests because you just kind of have to memorize the concept of a question because the same ones are on the SAT, just different wording... So don't worry, as long as you study you're going to do a LOT better the next time you take it!

Well, the SAT and ACT are tailored somewhat differently. The SAT might be better for people that are good with English, while the ACT is a much better test for people science/math oriented since it at least gives some leverage with the science section.

NO CHANCE at all

To me it really does seem like the ACT is easier because of what some seniors at my school said. Also, it usually seems that people who take the ACT get a higher score on that and a lower score on the SAT. I was also wondering if I already took the SAT I twice and I want to take the ACT, will the UC's count it towards me if I took the ACT twice before admissions because it would seem like I took too many tests. I heard that taking the SAT/ACT more than 3 times looks pretty bad on one's application and if I take the ACT twice, it would be a total of 4 SAT I/ACt if combined.

I just got a 29/30/30 on my ACTs!!! I hope this will improve my chances, although I'm not too sure. Thanks for all the info guys, but does this improve my chances greatly?

I thought there were 4 parts to the ACT... Anyways, if that averages out to a 29.5~30, then that's great news. A 1950on the SAT (Which is a 30 equivalent) will likely be able to offset your somewhat low GPA. Congrats on getting 200more pts. I think your chances are all the more better now.
