What are my chances for Deerfield Academy?

I'm an Chinese international student, 9th grade this year, applying for 10th grade.

Academics:
- Accepted into the Gifted Programme in 3rd grade (top 1% of students)
- Top in grade from 1st to 6th grade
- Received multiple prizes yearly for being top in English, Chinese, Math, Science and Social Studies from 1st to 6th grade, usually bagging all of them
- Accepted into the top girls' school in my country, which admits the top 2% of students here
- GPA of 3.91 out of a maximum of 4.0 (4.0s in Math, Chemistry, Physics, Integrated Science, History and Geography, 3.6 in Chinese and English) My English grades are bad, but I'm working on it!

Extra-curricular Activities:
- Play squash competitively (tore my ligament recently, but the pain is bearable and will not impede me from continuing to do so in the future)
- Part of the Girl Scouts community in my school where I participate in community involvement projects like caring for the elderly in nursing homes
- Was trained at ACRES (an animal concerns, research and educational society) and am an ambassador for their cause. Recently dispatched to our local zoo with a group of volunteers to evaluate the living conditions of animals there and am in the process of doing the write-up
- Participated in various beach clean-up activities
- Active volunteer at my school's open house and ECA open house

Interests:
- I scored a 95% in History (a very good score, average is around 78% because the questions our school sets are extremely challenging) and enjoy it very much
- I love doing self-initiated projects, especially in the aspect of Science. My most recent Biology-based project was graded 39/40 (rarely do students enter the 37-39 zone in my school) and my Science teacher will be sending it for an international competition next year (if I'm not wrong).
- I study accelerated Biology outside of school.
- I love squash! :D

Relationships:
- Am my Math teacher's 'model student' :P
- History teacher thinks I'm a pro (rarely listen in class because she's not a very good teacher)
- Have a neutral relationship with most teachers
- 'Highly intelligent', 'enormous potential', and 'high aptitude' were some of the phrases teachers described me as
- Teachers who know me well say I have a good personality and am supportive of my peers

Cons:
- I rarely speak up in class. I mean rarely. I prefer finding the answers out for myself and going through the whole process unaided, but my teachers think that I'm not inquisitive (Not talking does not equate to lacking curiousity!!)
- I swear sometimes, and that's frowned upon especially in my school
- Been in detention once (technically, it was class detention. In the future, as my duty as a Math Rep, I am responsible for switching the lights in my classroom off. Gosh. -.-)
- I don't talk to strangers often so my social skills are slightly lower than most American kids

Others:
- Taking 8th Jan SSAT, 98th percentile on Barron's practice test without prior learning

Please tell me my chances ASAP :) Thanks for your help!

I’m also a chinese international student!!! (8th grade though). Which school do you go to or where? (im in beijing)

Is your english good? I believe that boarding schools usually only accept students from china who have good english. They’ll know your level of english from your essays on the applications and interviews… but from what you’ve written, your english writing is probably fine =D

So I think you have very good chances!

Just prepare a little for interviews, you need to be good at socializing for that… but all your academics and extra curricular activities are great, and i’m sure you’ll do really well on the SSAT.

Make sure you distinguish yourself from other chinese students. A crazy number of students in china (international schools, but even more from local schools!) are applying to boarding schools. So there’s a lot of competition. And boarding schools accept very little students from china =(

Hey vivsters! :)

Haha nope I’m not from China; I’m from Singapore, and I don’t think I should disclose my school here for privacy reasons heh. Thanks for your positive feedback! /egoboost  I’ll definitely work on the interviews! :)

BUMP!
Any other reviews of my chances?

BUMP! :frowning: Please reply!

As long as you do fairly well at your interview and your english is good, you definitely have a good chance of getting in. good luck! i’m applying for next year too- maybe we’ll be classmates :)

Awesome! Good luck to you too, hope to see you around next year! :)

I know you go to the school that wears the blue and white uniform.

I was from there (:

Your chances, as far as I can tell, look good but you got to write excellent essays as well!

I wanted to go to Deerfield/Hotchkiss too when I was your age but my parents didn’t allow me. Actually, I didn’t ask but I know they wouldn’t agree.

Your current school is so good, why do you want to go to Deerfield?

Good luck for your SSAT! Have a good rest the night before!

i think you’ll do really well!!! “high aptitude” and all that normally are good signs ;)

could you chance back?

I’ll chance you if you honestly tell me why you want to go to Deerfield.

LOL ‘cons’… love, being in detention once isn’t a con imho, especially if it’s a class detention… and how are schools supposed to know? : P

i think you’re an excellent candidate. best of luck!

by the way, just curious. why ONLY deerfield, not any other school?

I want to go on exchange to Deerfield Academy through Round Square and would like to know if anyone has been excepted?

Hi there! I am a returning student at Deerfield

I’m not an international student, but we have a large number of students from China, as well as other parts of the world! Speaking English perfectly is NOT a requirement in order to get into Deerfield. There are ESL classes, if you test into them, but you seem like you can speak English very well. Squash is really popular at Deerfield and we are always welcoming new players! As and Bs are great grades at Deerfield because our classes are tough. Biology is normally taken Junior year, but with prior knowledge, you may be able to take an advanced Bio class!

I think your only problem would be your social con :frowning: Deerfield is really supportive of open relationships between students and teachers. Most teachers live on or near campus and have their doors open at all times. Having a close relationship with your teachers will help you strive here. I came in as a quiet student. I am close to my teachers, but didn’t talk much in class. Because of this, I was not receiving the grades I deserved for English and French because participation is a part of your grade. My teachers kept reminding me to speak up more. I have finally started doing this and it has truly helped me in class, as well as to build a strong relationship with my teachers!

When you are interviewed, make sure you are really honest and open-minded  Deerfield is all about being worthy of who you are! Let them know that you are aware of your pros AND cons, and that you are working to improve your flaws. Good luck!

OP has already been accepted to Deerfield.

thats really impressive you have a great chance as long as you score a high SSAT score and do well on the interview bc there are alot of other impressive applicants to!

Did You Get In?
