What are my chances of getting into NYU?

<p>I'm kind of in a rush, but let me give you some background information to help you with your decision.</p>

<ul>
<li>I've been home schooled since the fall of my freshman.</li>
<li>I scored a 32 on the ACT.</li>
<li>I took two SAT subject tests, scoring a perfect 800 in chemistry, and a 730 in math II.</li>
<li>I've been taking college classes at the local community college. Unfortunately, due to some health issues (getting the flu and pneumonia in the same semester) my GPA isn't the greatest. At the end of this semester, my cumulative GPA will be a 3.1; although, my GPA for that current semester will be a 3.3. I also feel that it is necessary to mention that I've only taken about 16 credit hours worth of classes. I'm not sure if the low amount of hours taken will make or break me.</li>
<li>As far as extracurricular activities go, I was in the boy scouts (although I probably wouldn't mention this, as I was only in for a short period of time), the civil air patrol, worked at a job, volunteered several hours for a political campaign, and spent the past three years helping take care of my next door neighbor who is currently 100 years old, and will be 101 on Christmas day.</li>
<li>As far as "special skills" go, I don't have many. I don't play any instruments, I don't play any sports (although from what I've researched, NYU isn't a big sports oriented school), and I'm not an actor and/or singer. The only talent I would even consider, although I find it to be no big deal, is that I can read, speak, and write in 3 languages (English, Latin, and Russian), and am planning to learn Mandarin Chinese sometime soon.</li>
<li>I wouldn't say that my family has much influence in the world. Here's a brief family history, though, and I'll let you be the judge.
- My mom was a professor at UT (Tennessee), and has worked for numerous companies regarding health and safety.
- My dad has his Master's in some sort of engineering (electrical, I think), and was the vice president of Toshiba for a long time. If it helps, my dad is also a Vietnam veteran; he served 8 years in the military.
- My brother got his Bachelor's back in 04, and currently works at Toshiba.</li>
<li>As far as family friends with influence, we have a couple.
- Our next door neighbor is the current governor of our state, and his dad was the founder of Pilot Flying J.
- We are also loosely acquainted with one of our congressmen.
- We have some close friends (husband and wife) that have what I believe to be a significant influence in the government and military.
- As far as recommendations go, my current psychology professor has taken a liking to me. We talk after almost every class for a good 15-20 minutes talking about psychology-related subjects. She will be my recommendation for NYU.</li>
<li>I'm Caucasian</li>
<li>My family is planning on paying for me tuition in full, with no financial aid.</li>
<li>My family is fairly wealthy.</li>
</ul>

<p>As far as my curriculum goes, it fulfills the requirements of NYU, and then some. It is listed as the following:
English: 4 years worth
Math: 4+ years worth; I've taken Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, Precalculus, and Calculus I (currently working on Calculus II)
History: 4 years worth
Science: 4 years, with all of them being laboratory sciences
Foreign Languages: 4+ years worth (Latin, Russian, and soon to be Mandarin Chinese)
Other studies that I've taken include Economics, U.S. Government, and Psychology.</p>

<p>College courses that I've taken include two English classes, chemistry, world civilizations, and psychology. Calculus I would've been added to that list, but I withdrew due to personal reasons. Other courses that I've taken that were based on college level material, but didn't take at the community college include: Economics, Calculus, Biology, Microbiology, and Human Physiology.</p>

<p>As you can see, I'm sort of a bookworm. My somewhat poor performance (what I consider to be poor, even though it is a B) is due to my adjustment of having deadlines. Prior to my dual-enrollment at my local community college, I wasn't really given deadlines. My work consisted mostly of reading and testing. While I did well on tests in college, my homework grades weren't quite so well. I had a bad habit of procrastinating when it came to homework, and then rushing through it, doing a half-assed job. I have changed my ways in the past month, and am more diligent when it comes to getting my homework done.</p>

<p>When I apply to NYU, they're going to require my college transcript, as well as my home school transcript. While my college GPA is a 3.1, my high school GPA associated with my home schooling is a 4.0. As I said, I'm better with tests than I am with homework (even though I've improved on my homework).</p>

<p>So my question is, what are my chances of getting into NYU? Is there anything that you could suggest that would increase my chances of getting in? Increasing my GPA is not an option. With the given amount of time left, this is the best I can do, making the best possible grades this semester. I appreciate your help, thanks!</p>

<p>If it helps, I’ve also been to Canada, Russia, Estonia, Denmark, Holland, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Panama, Mexico, most of the U.S. (including Alaska and Hawaii), and several places in the Caribbean. Also, if I were to get a letter of recommendation from my state’s governor, how well would that increase my chances?</p>

<p>You look very strong, especially for Stern. College GPA is a little low, but if you explain your story they shouldn’t hold it against you. Overall NYU seems like a good fit! Good luck (:</p>

<p>You have a solid chance. The only weakness is your GPA. Otherwise, with your ECs, you’ll be fine.</p>

<p>You look like you have a pretty good shot. Though I’m not sure why you put so much emphasis on the impact your family has on the world…</p>

<p>Pros:
-ACT is in the 75th percentile
-Excellent SAT Subject tests results
-High School GPA is superb</p>

<p>Cons:
-EC’s indicate no leadership roles. You said you did not indicate boy scouts in your application. You probably sent in your applications already, but if you haven’t you should take in some leadership EC’s. And as far as I know, taking care of a neighbor is nice and all, but idk if colleges will consider that as an EC. But taking care of a 101 old man for that long will probably be a very distinctive foundation of a college essay
-Your college GPA needs work.</p>

<p>Overall, I believe your chances to NYU based on your stats is a high match to low match</p>

<p>@gms2010gms Thanks, that’s the kind of response I was looking for, I really appreciate it! I haven’t applied yet, so I’ll try and find some EC with a leadership role. If you have any suggestions as to what type of EC I should take up, I’d appreciate it. If my neighbor wasn’t 101, I wouldn’t put that in my application. I would think that it would be considered an EC, though, seeing as I’m volunteering my time, and it could be considered community service. Thanks again!</p>

<p>You’re a very good applicant, and definitely add a unique flavor to the application. What I’m wondering about is the lack of awards. It is understandable though, since you’re homeschooled, but a lack of involvement may play against you. Good luck!</p>

<p>You have a really strong application, apart from your gpa of course but you know that already. I get that sometimes “its all about who you know” but for nyu i feel like they primarily are interested in YOU. after all, you’re the one that’s going to be applying and potentially attending their school and adding to the diversity on campus, not your family!
also i agree with sebelius, lack of involvement could be an obstacle for ya but i dont think you should worry about it too much because the rest of your application compensates for that. you’ve got a really good act score, im pretty sure thats above average for stern, so that’s definitely going to help. </p>

<p>overall, i’d say you’ve got a pretty good chance! you’re a very competitive applicant, congratulations. and good luck to you, hope ya get in! </p>

<p>NYU seems like a good fit for you, your background makes you different than everyone else. Indicate why your GPA is the way it is and you should be fine.</p>
