I was wondering what you think my chances of getting into UCSD are? My major would be Economics.
SAT: 1940(CR: 560 M: 640 W:740)
GPA: W- 4.66 UW- 3.84
Class Rank: 8/34
I go to a very small private school so I have tons of EC’s including multiple varsity sports and also jazz ensemble. My biggest concern is my class rank. I’m in the top 20% of my class but UCSD says that 100% of their students are top 10%. But on the other hand they say class rank is not considered.
And also, does your major affect your chances of getting in to UCSD?
UC GPA? https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
UCSD admits into the University first and then into the major. If you plan to apply to a “capped” major, you need to have a non-capped or non-impacted major as your alternate choice or you will be accepted as Undeclared. Unless you get a direct admit into a capped major, switching into the major later can be very competitive with no guarantees.
What is your intended major?
I would consider retaking the SAT especially trying to bump up your CR section which below the 25th percentile.
2016 Freshman profile:
Admit rate — Overall 35.9%
Admits: 30,264
Applicants: 84,222
California Residents (% of admits): 62.1%
GPA and test scores of middle 25%-75% students
High School UC GPA: 4.00 - 4.27
ACT Composite Score: 28 - 33
SAT Critical Reading: 590 - 720
SAT Mathematics: 630-770
According to UCSD’s common data set, your class rank will not be used for admissions. They just gather it because it is on the application that you submitted. It is a little like your ethnicity, they gather it and use it for reporting purposes only.
Like Gumbymom said, raising your SAT would not hurt. As of right now, you have a decent chance at being admitted. However, trying to get into capped/impacted majors (Biology, Economics, Math and Engineering), you must be towards the top of the applicant pool.
I was admitted for the Fall 2016 quarter for Pharmacological Chemistry with these stats:
SAT: 1610 (M:540 CR:580 W:490)
UC GPA: 4.13
