What are my chances of getting into University of Washington Seattle? NON-RESIDENT!

Hi everyone!

I'm currently a senior in high school, and ever since I was a freshman, I have wanted nothing more than to go to the UW. I have searched the pages of their website and everything about their Seattle campus is what I am looking for. I'm in love with this school.

Personally, I believe my chances of getting in if I lived in Washington would be pretty decent. However, I live in Wisconsin. Don't ask me how I found this campus or why I am looking at a college that is 1800 miles away. I kind of wish I hadn't found it because I'm entirely too crazy about it.

Anyway, my mom and I will be visiting the campus in October to decide if this is the school I want. I was going to wait until I (hopefully) got in, but this is honestly distracting me from looking at other colleges. I want to know if this is the right school for me, but if my chances of getting in aren't good, then I won't visit the campus and I'll have to move on.

Here are my stats! Before you cringe at my GPA and class rank, I had several issues during my freshman and part of sophomore year where I nearly failed a couple classes. However, I managed a 4.0 last year and (so far) this year in some of the hardest classes I have ever taken. I am normally a straight A student. The year and a half of bad grades was extremely unusual. I had issues.

I'm planning to major in Marketing and Spanish, with a certificate in International Business.

GPA (unweighted): 3.44 :( (expecting it to raise to a 3.6 this year; do not know my weighted GPA, our school doesn't have that)
Rank: 35/85
ACT: 28 with an 8 in writing (retaking this Saturday, new score will be most likely 30 or above. I also don't think that 8 reflects my writing skills at ALL. I got a 33 in English.)
AP classes: AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics, AP Calculus AB
Dual Credit Courses: Intro to Environmental Science, Anatomy and Physiology
Schedule: Extremely rigorous for my school (small, rural high school), and pretty rigorous for any school, actually. Four years of foreign language (Spanish)

Academic Awards:
Math Honor Award
Writing Honor Award
Academic Letter
Possibility in AP Scholar

ECs:
Link Crew Leader (senior year)
Future Business Leaders of America (senior year)
Spanish Club (all four years of high school, President this year)
Student Council (all four years, plus three in middle school)
Student Council Junior Class Treasurer
Forensics (won 1st in Conference for poetry, junior year)
Key Club (freshman year)
Yearbook Committee (sophomore year)

Work:
McDonald's (sophomore year)
Kmart (first part of junior year)
Oakdale Credit Union Bank Teller (junior year - present, earning a finance credit through school)

Sports: Two years of track, might do softball this year

Leadership experience: Link Crew Leader, FBLA, Leadership Congress last summer (and earned a $2,000 scholarship for best essay), three-week college course at Loyola University Chicago for entrepreneurship/leadership last summer (one of 50 chosen applicants out of 500+), Student Council Treasurer and participated other six years

Volunteering:
Fairview Nursing Home, only 30 official hours
Been volunteering all my life in girl scouts, part of Key Club, or just on my own

Also, I have nine college credits already, AND I will be graduating early to attend a nearby tech college. By the time I am in college, I'll have over 30 credits and will achieve Sophomore status.

As for the UW essays, I'm an exceptional writer. I think that will be my strongest point because my writing has always stood out as different. If it matters at all, I am also applying to Marquette University (easy), University of Minnesota Twin Cities (medium), Loyola University Chicago (medium), and Purdue University (stretch, but attainable, I think)

Sorry for such a long post! Honesty is very much appreciated with this. Brutal honesty, actually. I don't want to waste $1000 visiting the campus or my time in obsessing over this school. Thank you SO much!

I’m currently a senior in high school, and ever since I was a freshman, I have wanted nothing more than to go to the UW.
This made me smile because we live 10 miles from U of Wash and my D14 dreams of going to the other UW (Madison). She has zero interest in going to a school so close to home and likes the idea of going somewhere far away from familiar surroundings, but close to relatives.

I can’t comment on your chances because UWash has not been reliable regarding acceptance. Several years ago almost nobody we knew from in-state got in, while many OOS students with lower stats, but deeper pockets, were accepted. Talk about an uproar–newspapers, state politicians, and parents were very vocal about the inequity. As a result, almost everyone we knew who applied from in-state the next year got in, while OOS acceptances were limited. This year’s class seemed more balanced re: acceptances. But, I’m no expert–just observing from the sidelines.

Best of luck.

That’s so funny! I live about an hour away from Madison, and my mom wants me to go there, but just the thought of being so close to home is so unappealing :stuck_out_tongue: it is a great school though, so good for her for having such an aspiration :)

Thank you for the reply! I saw some articles saying the same thing, how it’s hard to tell who will be accepted. I just wish I had an idea if I’d make it! I don’t want to waste the money and time on a school I don’t have a chance with.

Bump please!
