what are my chances?

I have a 3.33 unweighted gpa and a 1660 on the SATs (500 in math, 550 in critical reading, and 610 in writing), and a 25 on the ACTs. I work three days a week in the summer and during the school year, I donate blood every two months and do a lot of extra volunteering. I've been in the same 2 honors classes since freshman year and next year, I'm taking 2 AP's and another honors. I've done three seasons of sports every year, and varsity on all of them since sophomore year. Do you think I'll get in?

Your stats are in the low average range of students admitted to UD. The rigor of your HS classes is in your favor. Unless you are applying for some of the more competitive majors at UD (i.e. chemical engineering, nursing and a few others) I think your chances are reasonably good for admission. It really would help you if you could increase your SAT scores by 100-150 points or increase your ACT score by 2-3 points. The stats for students accepted to UD have really been increasing over the last 5 years. It is becomong increasingly difficult to get accepted there as the school’s academic reputation (coupled with its reasonably manageable cost for OOS students) is beginning to skyrocket (UD had a Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry last year). I feel this trend will only increase further for applicants next year. Actually UD is a hidden gem and the education you can get there is equal to that of the top ranked public institutions (i.e. Michigan, Virginia, North Carolina). I’m assuming you are an OOS student. If you are a Delaware resident, you are in. Best of luck to you.

If you are in state, you will definitely get in. Out of state, you could have some difficulty. Your stats are decent; you could use improvements on your SATs. Your work experience and extra curriculars will definitely help you, but if possible try and buckle down, study hard, and improve those SATs. Personally, I think you’ll get in easily as long as you’re not from New Jersey, New York, or Maryland. This is because the majority of UD’s students come from those three states (excluding Delaware) and you will most likely have a competitive class. Also, it would help us to know your major. There are some selective and some other not so selective programs that could help/hurt your chances. Good luck in applying, Delaware is a great school that is very rapidly on the rise.

Its true that your SATs are on the low side for OOS admission. Have you thought about taking the ACT? ACTs are more curriculum based than the reasoning based SAT. I know of several students at my D’s HS that scored a tier higher on the ACT (in terms of percentile) than they did on the SAT. Assuming you have good teachers and you learn and retain, you might surprise yourself. If you do score better on the ACT you never have to report the SAT. There are plenty of charts out there that equate SAT scores to ACT scores.

Good luck. Udel is a fine school.
