So I took AP Calc AB this year and got an A. My orientation at the U is on June 10, which is way before AP scores come out, so I don’t really know what to do. I got 5s on all of the full-length practice tests we took in class and my teacher explicitly told me that I should forgo Calc I at the U and go right into Calc II. I read the course description for Calc I and feel confident in all aspects listed, so would I be able to go straight into Calc II? My only concern is that since I’m in CBS and Calc I is a requirement of my major, would I be able to apply the credit I’ll presumably receive from the AP exam toward my major, or do I have to retake the class at the U?
What is the AP credit policy at the University? If you need a 3 or above to opt out of Cal I and you are confident you did well on the AP exam, sign up for Calc II during orientation.
@Veggie716 … Will you be in the Honors program at UMinn? Our D1 had 5’s on both Calc AB and Chemistry when she entered as a freshman, but opted to take the Honors version of both classes to help fulfill her Honors requirements as opposed to “using” the AP credits.
For orientation, they want you to have a list what AP/IB classes you have taken as well as other classes you may want to xfer (eg CC or PSEO credits). For AP tests you took in May, they ask you to estimate your score. They said that they thought students estimated their scores fairly accurately.
As Wolverine88 mentioned, depending on your major and whether you are in honors, you may want to consider taking calc 1/honors Calc at UMN. I’m thinking that your adviser at UMN may give best info on this once you discuss your major plan w him/her.
I think you can count AP credits toward your major for the sort of run-up pre-req classes in your major like Calc I.
BTW, colleges get the AP scores before students do. Around mid-June you may want to check your APAS report and see if if your recent AP tests are on there. Your score will be the # after the T - eg T5 means you have a score of 5 on that test. It’s a good idea to run the APAS before orientation just to make sure all your expected xfer credits are there (AP, PSEO etc). My son’s credits are messed up and now he has a heads up and can hopefully address it during registration.
My S is in similar situation of having to estimate AP test scores because of early orientation. But fortunately none of the tests this round affect his major - they are mostly to fulfill lib ed reqs and he probably wont’ xfer physics since CSE requires he takes UMN version anyway. I may be wrong (what’s new?), but from reading xfer credit info on UMN website, I think you pay around $50/credit xferred. So that is something my S is going to ask at orientation. If you aren’t going to use the credit or have to repeat the class anyway, you may not want to pay to xfer the credits(?)
