Hello! Im a undergrad VP major. I have just finished all of my applications, recommendations, etc. Now, I am finishing up my prescreening cd. I have applied to:

Wow! Glad to see that I am not the only one to apply to 10 schools! (10 essays were killer… I’m sure your D agrees!) I sent the last of my pre-screenings out yesterday… glad to finally finish everything - but waiting to hear back is going to be torture!

I wish your D the best!! Please keep me updated on her auditions/acceptances!

These aren’t really in any particular order. But I guess I put my reaches at the top since that seems to be what everyone else is doing? Idk haha :)

For music schools, and in no order, my D is applying to:
Northwestern/Bienen
Rice/Shepherd
Oberlin
U Michigan
Vanderbilt/Blair
Lawrence
Miami/Frost
Juilliard

and also several more schools that do not give B Mus degrees.

bassbari94 - From what I’ve noticed from past forum postings, the schools seem to contact about the pre-screenings anywhere from middle of December to late January.

I figured out the dates from reading this discussion:

We are still looking at applying to one or two more schools but so far D is applying to the following schools for VP.

New England Conservatory

Eastman School of Music

Juilliard School

Rice - Shepherd School of Music

Curtis Institute of Music

Peabody Conservatory

NC School of the Arts

Mannes College of Music

Miami - Frost School of Music

University of Maryland School of Music

Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory

Could anyone make a suggestion of good music school way way up in the northeast?

^ How on earth do you manage that many auditions? Are you planning on auditioning at all of them if you pass the prescreen? My S’s voice teacher recommended applying to about 6 schools. We just can’t handle anymore auditions than that. Now for MT (my D is an MT major) I hear that 10-12 is normal, but for VP?

D’s voice teacher seems very confident that she will get through all prescreenings, but yes we may not audition at ALL of them. However, at the top of the thread you will see that there are two are other users with VP majors auditioning at 10 schools.

I definitely plan on passing and auditioning at all of the schools I listed. I would not have applied if my teacher and I did not think I was ready. I went ahead and made myself a schedule of when all of the live auditions occur at each of the schools I applied to. The dates do not conflict for the most part. I believe that VP is just as competitive as MT and you should keep your options as open as possible. Just my opinion though

anothermezzomom-I don’t know anything about it but I’ve seen some posts about McGill from time to time. Maybe you should check that out? It seems “way way up in the northeast” to me :)

My kid is applying as double major in cello performance and composition to the following schools and they are not in any special order:
Eastman
Oberlin
Lawrence
Jacobs-Indiana
Ithaca College
St. Olaf
Carneige Mellon
SUNY Fredonia
and we are planning to hit send on the last of the applications tonight.
And now we wait!

although mezzolove is planning to audition at all of those schools if possible, it is not an uncommon strategy to apply to more schools than you intend to audition for. In many cases, the number goes down after the pre-screening round. Some people have an early audition or two and then weed out some of the remaining choices based on the early results. In other cases, the audition may be done by recording rather than live. Six live auditions is a good number, but that does not preclude you from applying to more than that number of schools.

anothermezzomom: Have you considered Boston University? It qualifies as “in the northeast” and has a strong conservatory-style BM program within an all-around great university. Although B.U. as a whole is a large university, the School of Music is fairly small and intimate yet all of the resources of the larger university are available.
