What does a guy wear to the shower room?

Asked S1-he said he generally wears gym shorts & t-shirt (also sleeps in this) and carries shaving bag & towel over shoulder. Said some of the jock types parade around in only a towel tucked around their waist and don't exactly make a bee-line to the showers, especially if there are girls around.

when D was a freshman she lived on a freshman-only coed floor with 10 girls and 38 guys .By Parents Weekend, they were parading around in towels, boxers and t shirts. I would suspect bathrobes would give some "comfort" at first but they'll be feeling homey and comfortable in a very short while.Everyone carries those shower totes. Flip flops (cheap ) are a great idea if they'll use them. Hardest thing to remember when using the bathroom in the middle of the night is your room key !

Great topic, thanks! S attended accepted student days at one college and said all the guys there wore bathing suits to the shower! He felt odd because he hadn't brought one along. Sounds like that must be the custom at that particular school only? (It's in the south, if that makes a difference.) S will be attending a school in the northeast, though, so I guess either shorts or towel would be the preferred attire.

A pair of gym shorts would do the trick if your son is modest

we had coed bathrooms at my school (showers were in in a large locked stall with a bench for clothes, and then the shower curtain was in the back). both guys and girls would walk back and forth from the showers in robes (guys usually wearing dark colored robes), and their shower caddies (easily found at bedbathandbeyond, target, etc). in 4 years i never saw anything indecent. a robe and flipflops are absolute essentials for college!

Thanks for this thread. The other day we were at the Container Store "event" for off to college kids. I picked out what I thought was a very nice, cool rubber shaving kit (navy blue) and asked my son if he wanted it for the shower. If looks could kill...he said "you know Mom, kids could still get beat up in college." (?!!!)

This thread is so funny to me for some reason. Guess it's one of those things I never thought of. I cannot imagine my son in a robe at all. The image even makes me laugh. Can't imagine him with a shower tote. Gym shorts, yes, because I think that's what he sleeps in since they are always on the floor of his bedroom next to his bed LOL. Also for cold weather, those flannel, elastic waist pants...I can envison those going down the hall to the bath. T-shirt possibly. Towel wrap, yes. Boxers maybe if they aren't ripped in a bad spot :-) Plastic bag or no bag, yes. Flip Flops or Reefs, definitely. My S is on the swim team so he knows what a royal pain plantar warts are. Boy, I'm old enough we didn't even have co-ed housing at my school. Never even thought about this

My kid bought himself a terrycloth robe and tie-dyed it; he seems to wear that or just his boxers back and forth to the hall shower, and carries a towel over his shoulder and his stuff in his hand. Barefoot. He does not shave, and has a sink in his room where he brushes his teeth. He is on a co-ed hall, where everyone is very casual about what they wear.

The more modest guys in my co-ed suite tended to wear robes or a t-shirt and gym shorts back and forth to the shower, while the less modest ones just wore boxers or a towel around the waist.

I would note that even boxer briefs are not entirely eschewed -- my next-door neighbor liked to roll out of bed and hit the showers in his boxer briefs. I love the kid, but that's a little too much information for me! :)

My S actually answered this question when I asked him a moment ago...Eureka!

He wore towel around waist; carried soap and shampoo in hand to shower. Second trip for tootbrushing/shaving - carrying toothbrush/shaver in hand, as needed (I get the impression shaving was optional oftentimes ;) ).

I had bought him those plastic totes with holes and handles. He did store his stuff in those in the room, but took out what he needed for the stroll down the hall.

He said some guys wore "clothes" to the shower.

He was at two different schools due to Katrina, so I guess he's "been around."

I cannot imagine my S wearing a bathrobe of any kind, but from the above posts, I see there's lots of ways to go.

I am just amazed at the variety of responses that have come forward. It is certainly an eye-opener. Many of the answers made me chuckle...!! I guess just about anything goes.

Oooh to be so young and carefree!!!!

Isn't life grand?

Addendum: S opted for the plastic bottle of Body Wash or liquid soap - solves the "melting soap" problem. Showers shoes a definite - even for my minimalist S.

Plantar warts. You (or your child) do not want to spend 2-3 weeks of your summer recovering from foot surgery.

We are always barefoot at home, but mine never go barefoot anywhere in the dorm at camp or in hotels.

Mine just wraps up in his towel and carries his soap and shampoo in his hand. He received a very nice, monogrammed shower tote thing as a hs graduation gift. It's still in his room at home.

My S. said he just wrapped towel and carried little plastic tote thing. He liked the body wash also so that you didn't have the messy bar. Said he would never go in shower without his cheap flip flops. For quick trips in the middle of the night--just his boxers. He did say you saw all things---one guy on his floor actually showered in bathing suit all year (did get talked about alot though). A few guys used robes, but kinda in that cool left open way over their boxers (I'm thinking Abercrombie catalog look :)). He did cologne, deoderant and all that stuff in room.
