What does it take to get in Kelley these days?

My mom just got a job offer in Chicago, and we're hoping to live on the outskirts for I can attend IU for in state costs. It's kinda ironic... What does it take to get into Kelley. The worst possible thing that could happen is that I make all these sacrifices, and I get shut down; that would SUCK! Average GPA now?

You would have to live in Indiana to get instate tuition to IU. A long commute from Northwest Indiana to Chicago, but a lot of people do it. IU is much easier to get into than University of Illinois.

I know I can easily get in IU, but how hard is it to get in Kelley when you apply after freshman year? I have a 3.4, so direct admission is out.

Thanks

Haha, yeah, but the drive is worth it for Kelley. I've wanted to go to IU for 3 years now, but the oos tuition eliminated IU from my longtime list. Thid would be perfect.

Sorry, it's actually "Skokie, Illinois." It's 10-15 mins from Chicago. How far would Skokie be from NW Indiana, if you know? As you see, the plan is pretty rough. Someone who used to do this told is about it...

Kelley's not that hard to get into from the calculations (there
was a massive thread last week with a bunch of calculations
as to the exact #s and percentages using info aggregated from
different sites) and we came up with...

If you get a 3.0 at IU in your freshman year, you have an 82%
chance of getting admitted. Pretty good.

By the way, try using the search button next time ya? This topic
has been beaten to death.

I know that back in the day if you got a 3.0; you were automaticaly in. I was just worried, due to the 20% acceptance rate. How are 80% rejected? Are they stupid, seriously. Explan this please... Is IU that hard to get a 3.0???

Thank you

IrishGuy--I am VERY familiar with NW IN as I was raised there and also familiar with the IL suburbs around Chicago as lived there for 15 years or so.

IF your mom's job was downtown, the commute from NW IN is as easy, or easier, than many of the IL suburbs. The IN town I grew up in was physically closer to Chicago than the most recent IL suburb I lived in.

The commute from NW IN to Skokie is another matter. Skokie is north of the city. That means she would need to drive through or around the city. On a good day she would be looking at an hour fifteen or an hour and a half commute. That's a good day. If there is an accident, or snow, or rain, or road construction or anything else.....

One possibilty might be for your mother to take the South Shore into the city and then catch a train up to Skokie. It's not going to shorten the commute time, but will lessen some of the exhaustion that comes with that type of daily commute. I'll pm you website where they would really be able to answer this question.

It's not just getting the 3.0 overall that's difficult, it's that you also need to have the 3.0 in 4 out of the following 5 classes (which is fairly challenging)--and for most students, they need to have also taken and passed A100, which has an average GPA of about 2.3

The five classes are:

English Composition W231
Computer in Business K201
Finite Math M118
Survey of Calculus I M119; and
Introduction to Business X100

Of these, the Computer in Business course and the Intro to Accounting A100 course are the ones that do most people in--and if you check the schedule of classes, you'll see that they do not allow you to pick your professor for the K201 course. Your register, then find out your professor--and transferring from one class to another is essentially impossible since all the class sessions fill up before professors are posted. And generally, the same professor teaches all of the A100 classes (that is, all of the A100 class sessions have the same professor, I didn't mean that the same professor teaches both K201 and A100).

It should also be noted that the average GPA at IU-B is around 3.1--and this includes Kelley and the honors students who are already admitted. So getting 3.0 is not a guarantee, but if you are good at math and don't party and study (and not spend all your time with video games or visiting with friends), then I wouldn't expect you to have any problem. A 3.4 is just a bit below the direct admit level, and you seem to be concerned about Kelley--meaning you are likely to make the effort needed to get in.

Best of success to you.

Thanks for all the info, but it looks like I'm not going... My mom can't travel 15 mins without complaining, let alone an hour to an hour and half in bad conditions.

One question, "is 32k worth it?" I know if you want to major in accounting, IU will only hinder you, but what about finance. What are the real opportunities associated with it?

Does ugrad for finance not matter that much?

Chicago traffic will be nightmarish for someone from the Chattanooga area, and not just the commute to work. It is really bad all the time there and gets worse every year.

The train commute from NW Indiana to Skokie during rush hour would be about an hour and a half to two hours each way. A little less than an hour from NW Indiana to downtown, about a half hour via the Metra train to near Skokie, then a Pace bus from the Metra station to Skokie. It would be faster and easier to commute from Kenosha WI to Skokie than NW Indiana to Skokie.

If you move to Illinois, the University of Illinois business school will be much tougher to get into than Indiana. Kelley (and the Krannert School of Management at Purdue also) is full of excellent students from suburban Chicago that go to IU or Purdue because they couldn't get into UIUC.

Is UIUC that hard to get into, now I'm worried... What about NIU I am going to major in accounting and finance, accounting more inportantly. NIU is ranked 10-11 every year in the public accounting report. UIUC is 2nd... Although, NIU had a 73% CPA exam pass rate, the second highest pass rate in the US. UIUC is not even close...

My goal is to be a Big 4 CPA, if I can't go to Kelley. I wouldn't settle for any other ugrad. Hopefully accounting will launch me to a top finance MBA. I tend to think ugrad finance is a waste, because your MBA in finance is the real investment. I don't know anymore...

The College of Business at UIUC is harder to get into. The 2007 Business Week rankings have these admission stats.

SAT Scores for full-time entering business students:

Kelley
Average 1222
Median 1240
Range (Middle 80%) From 1140 to 1310

Illinois business
Average 1310
Median
Range (Middle 80%) From 1240 to 1380

U of I Admissions: Freshman Admission Requirements

A huge difference in top ten percent rank for freshmen class getting into the university. Illinois 59%; Indiana 31%.

Sorry, what about UIC? It has the better finance program. Ranked 21st in US News for finance and 32nd for accounting. I wished UIC had a forum here...

Thanks

Are they stupid, seriously. Explan this please... Is IU that hard to get a 3.0???

hahhaha most of them are not motivated to study..

1) Grade "B" and above in all subjects, one B-, your chances reduced greatly, one grade "B-" and below, don't bother applying.
2) Average cumulative GPA 3.0, remember B- = GPA 2.7.
A, A+ = 4.0
A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3
B = 3.0
B- = 2.7
C+ = 2.3
C = 2.0
C- = 1.7
So, do your calculation.
3) plan and write your admission essay earlier, the essay DOES matter.
4) Beware of L201. Take replacement for E370 if you think Econometrics is not your thing. Math-M365 is for students with higher math aptitude. Math-K310 is a easier version of E370. Either way, K310 and M365 will NOT prepare you well for Icore.
5) You want to get easy A for Bus-X204, go for "Burks." She's funny and easy grade. I hope still.

Kennytanck.. I am signed up for x-205 (the honors version of x-204)... do you think this class will hurt my GPA? / should I instead sign up for the x-204

"K310 and M365 will NOT prepare you well for I-Core". Really? And E370 will?

Read some of the comments on rate my professor if you need proof, kids have no idea what's going on in the class.

Mary Beth Camp - Indiana University Bloomington - RateMyProfessors.com

"Hates students, helpful one on one but otherwise has no interest in making sure students understand. take math k310, apparently much easier and don't buy the textbook, a lot of busy work which helps improve your grade despite failing all tests"

"wihout doubt this class is worthless and She is a horrible professor. I have learned absolutely nothing in this class, but for anyone who has to take it in the future don't worry about getting a decent grade. I have done absolutely horrible all semester and I am still going to get a C at the worst. This class sucks but anyone can get through it."

"Worst teacher at Indiana University and/or associated with the prestigious Kelley School of Business. Bitter, uninformative, and overall annoyance towards students... Throwing pens at kids and yelling at imaginary people that were supposedly talking was more important than teaching us the material. I learned a lot more from my foreign Lab A.I."

"Right now I'm trying to study for the final which is impossible to do. The last test was so bad a curve wouldn't help. She just gave everyone 100% and people are still doing bad in the class. Never ask a question, she will tear into you like a lion into a gazelle."

"I'm currently studying for the final and just realized that I learned more in my one credit Beginner Bowling Class then I did in Mary Beth Camp's E370 class. I can't believe Kelley makes students waste their time on this class. You'd probably get a higher grade blindly guessing on every question on the test rather than actually studying."

"Mary Camp's employment and her relationship to the Kelley School of Business is an embarrassment to the school and to the students. At no point in her misdirected and disorganized class did I learn a single thing that I did not learn on my own. She has only worsened my understanding of statistics. Worst professor I have ecountered at IU."

"She honestly is the worst professor I have every had. I went into the class with the same knowledge about business statistics as I left with."

"Mary Elizabeth Camp is the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. She does not teach. Her class is ridiculously complicated, including several extra components along with about 6 books you have to buy. Its a joke that business majors attending the Kelley School have to take a class such as this."

X205 is very demanding, you probably have a greater chance to get A in "Angela Burks" BUS-X204 class. Check out her grade distribution. However, her classes normally got filled up early with tons of wait-lists...

hmm.. E370? personally, I took M365 which is easier for me, well.. Yeahz.
Personally, the reviews i heard from friends who took E370 for the past 3 semesters, none of the professors actually know how to teach.
So well, self-study then. E370 prepares you only that much. If u seriously want to do well, Take BUS-G350 before Icore then, or better BUS-G304 before ICore.
The operation management and forecasting in marketing will stress you out... My Advise?? Know your regression really well! not how to do it, but what it meant under various business subjects. Know what is Rsq, T-stats, big.. "REGRESSION!"

"1) Grade "B" and above in all subjects, one B-, your chances reduced greatly, one grade "B-" and below, don't bother applying."

We'll see if this statement is true in a couple of weeks when I get my admission results back. Honestly, why do people arbitrate the admission requirements when nobody actually knows the true statistics for admission?

kennytanck.. obviously I would def like to go for the easy A and take x-204.. im not trying to be all gung-ho and take difficult honors classes I just am afraid to be grouped up with slackers if I join x-204 additionally I also need to take 9-12 credits worth of honors classes for the Mitte honors program and I assumed its better to take x-205 honors than a-207 managerial accounting honors.
