What does the middle 50 % on a 4.0 scale mean?

Hello everyone,

The profile of admitted transfer students to CAL this year had a range of GPA's of "3.64-4.0", with the "middle 50 percent of students on a 4.0 scale).

Range of GPAs: 3.64–4.0
(middle 50 percent of students on a 4.0 scale)

I understand that middle 50 percent is supposed to mean that 25% were below 3.64, and 25% were above 4.0. However how is this possible since transfer students can not achieve a GPA higher than 4.0?

I expect it would mean that more than the top 25 percent of admitted students had a 4.0.

What Sue said. Essentially, the top 75% of admitted students had a GPA of >3.6.

That is, if I’m not a moron.

Yes, and that students at the 75th percentile have a 4.0 average. This would happen if the top 26 percent or more of applicants have a 4.0.
