Instruction begins one week after the semester begins. So what goes on during that week?

wild sex parties

Awesome!
:-)

It is indeed the ‘adjustment’ period. Caltopia is the biggest event among countless other ones happening at Sproul including my favorite: free ice cream giveaway. Unofficially, you should visit some frats w/ your new buddies and experience some real college right away.

But there is no work done during that week?

Hustlin’ and getting girls = tons of work already.

the official start of a semester is a date that matters more to staff than to students.

That is when various services start, when departments need to have people available, when a new ‘semester’ of authorization is needed for the gym, when prep work for the beginning of classes may occur . . .

Move-in day for the dorms is later so for many that is the first practical day to arrive on campus. Generally, you look at the start of classes as the key date and work backwards to plan for arriving back on campus, ignoring the ‘start of semester’ date.

For Fall 2011:

start of semester is Thursday August 18

move-in to the dorms is Saturday August 20 or Sunday August 21 based on room type

welcome activities don’t begin until Monday August 22

classes start on Thursday August 25th

The most important thing for new students is to meet friends, learn your way around, and beware of dark cowled upperclassmen swooping through the night, hitting on overly trusting incoming students.
