ND, by far, with an undergraduate population of about 40% legacy, it's kind of hard to have an undergraduate class that is as academically qualified as other schools which have a smaller legacy pool basing acceptions more on merit (not saying legacy kids can't be intelligent, but well, you know where I'm going with this). And what, Tufts, what's wrong with you?

musictoad: those schools' USNWR rankings greatly exceed their general academic reputation.<<

In that case how could "half the LACs" be overrated? Unless you also think that the other half is underrated.

CalX, which LAC's are you talking about?

All ivies for sure

Duke and Dartmouth, in my opinion.

MIT, in my opinion. ;)

"All ivies for sure"

If the Ivies are so overrated, why are you asking for chances to four of them?

People who say the ivy league schools are overrated aren't saying they aren't good schools. Just that they aren't significantly better than other good schools like many people make them out to be. People treat the ivy's like they are so far above other top schools when that's not actually the case. That's not saying they aren't amazing but other places are equally great.

UPENN and DUKE!

UPENN, I've been looking at rankings for various majors. UPENN manages to be very highly ranked in general, without being very highly ranked in as many subject areas as schools with which it is supposedly on or close to par. Wharton being the exception.

Brown--no facts, admittedly, but my impression after visiting was that it seems like the perfect place for an intelligent, artsy, but directionless rich kid who really won't need a career if he doesn't want one due to old money he stands to inherit afterward.

It is still completely beyond me how NYU managed to top Princeton Review's list of dream schools. I don't get the fascination.

It shouldn't be hard to understand...
NEW YORK CITY.

not to mention the ridiculous amount of free publicity it gets on TV

i was just watching Veronica Mars last night and they mentioned NYU like twice

Emory, UPenn, WashU, NYU, Vandy. Under-rated UChicago, Gtown and CAL. Under-rated LAC's-Bowdoin, Holy Cross, and Davidson.

Don't tell people not to pass judgment when you can't even spell the word. ;-) 1 e in judgment, not 2.

on another note, imo - notre dame, penn, duke, cmu, universities of california, gtown, nyu, bc - all overrated.

underrated imo - michigan, chapel hill, virginia, tufts, w&m, chicago

Jags, you can spell it both ways. (www.dictionary.com)

Montana, it's called financial aid :-)

I dont think Duke and Penn are overrated... just "overranked" which is a different thing.... and they still arent overranked by much... i mean the difference between the top 5 and the top 10

For many people Ivies are cheaper than state schools. There is no denying they generally have awesome financial aid for those who need it.

Overrated: Penn and Duke definitely, Wash U., maybe Northwestern a little bit
Underrated: Georgetown, Tufts, Cornell, Brown

Basically all the schools in the top 15 are equal in quality/prestige, but I don't think Wash U. should be in the top 15.

I totally agree with Richard!!! G town is so under rated. But Ivies are expensive for what they give you while your at college.. And it's still har to get financial aid unless yur valec and have 2400 and blah blah

ridethecliche,

actually, in american english - judgment is the correct spelling and judgement is incorrect. While technically judgement with the e has become more standard in UK english, it still remains incorrect in american english. and since this is america ;-).
