I realize that DUKE hit a record numbers applicants four years in a row or something...but can Duke be considered "up there" now that allegedly one thousand students have applied with SAT's above 1550!

What do you think is the minimum in overall stats?
also can some people who were freshly admitted into Duke please tell me what kinda EC's they had?

as with any college, there is no "minimum" stat, aside from completing your high school requirements. Obviously, a 2.0 GPA/ 1500 new SAT kid would have next to nill chances at Duke, unless he happens to be an excellent basketball player (heh, heh). Dukes middle 50% for the SAT subsections fall around 670-780. 98% of the incoming class had a 3.0+ GPA (those other 2% make up about 32 people, just enough to keep the basketball team going)

Does Duke really emphasize test scores and GPA? Do they also consider other factors such as essays, interviews, etc.? I just heard that it is really number-driven. Is that true?

Apparantly not. I was at a Duke info session this morning, and the admissions lady said that your transcript is the most important part of your application. She said they'd rather look at 4 years of work than 4 hours of test taking.

Also, they said the middle 50% SAT was from 1410 to 1550, or something like that.

Sorry, I know you were joking, wasn't trying to paint you a fool. I'm just wondering how you'd account for that number of people. Probably a mix of development cases, hardship cases, "non-traditional" intellectuals, as well as jocks.

Duke's got a dozen NCAA teams that were ranked in the top 10 last year, so they do look for elite atheltes. The athletes are not, however, a big academic liability. It takes a lot of dedication to compete and go to school at Duke. And most graduate on time. The basketball team doesn't hang banners until everyone on the team graduates, and there are a LOT of banners in Cameron. Meanwhile, the football team graduates almost everyone evry year--the highest percentage each year in the country during almost all of the past 20 years. Jocks are an easy target, but, for almost all Duke sports, those guys are competing at the highest level in the NCAA and are solid students.

About 35ppg, 12rpg, and good enough that you could have gone pro right out of high school. I am a huge Duke fan, probably the only one in Arkansas, so I am just kidding. Seriously though, there is a Duke alumni article that pretty much spells out your chances at Duke. I (I am a good student, and my chances were not good. However, I am still hopeful!) I will try to find the link and get it here.
