I'm currently trying to decide between stanford or duke as far as my super reach dream school, and I think what it is going to come down to is which one I honestly have a better chance of getting into. So I was wondering, since my stats completely suck for duke (3.85 or so UW in hardest courses, 30 ACT), whats the "worst" applicant you've seen get into duke? And athletes do not count because I'm not going to be a male Reka Zsilinszka who can go wherever he wants because of tennis.

I applied to Stanford early action, and I was flat-out rejected. I applied to Duke RD, and I ended up getting a likely letter in February, saying that I would be accepted in March. However, its different for everyone...I definitely had more than one super reach, so you can apply to both.

Did you know Duke's median ACT ranges from 29-34?

If your worried just apply to duke ED, or maybe apply to both RD? Seriously.

Don't worry about it and just continue to focus on your EC's/grades.

On another note, there are way to many people who post here with stats in the >99 percentile, 3.95 gpa, and half a page of EC's thinking they'll have to settle for a community college or something.

well, i still think that you should apply to both. however, if you're trying to decide where to apply early, remember that stanford doesn't like to defer kids. so its all or nothing with them. i'm not sure how many kids are deferred with duke ed, but remember that its binding so you need to make sure that you really like the school.

Sorry. In answer to your implicit question, no I don't know of anyone with stats as low as yours who was accepted to Duke. Still, you have a better shot at Duke than Stanford.

i wasn't recruited--though I am African American and had one of a kind extracurriculars (if i do say so myself)-- my gpa was a 3.87 W (though only about 3.6 at the time i applied) and my SAT was a 2040...
again, i'm more than posetive my extracurriculars are what set me apart from all other applicants and ultimately got me in (through the Robertson Scholars Program)

one of my friends had 2200's sats, 3.8 gpa but got deferred then waitlisted and got a handwritten note from admissions telling her that if it were any other year, she'd have been in... i felt so bad for her

There are so many factors that admissions officers look at that it's really worthless to look at numbers. When I was deferred from Duke last year, I spent so much time reading and re-reading my application to see what I did "wrong" and comparing myself to people on CC who got in, but in the end, there's no one reason why you didn't make it and someone else did. So good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back from places, and just know that you'll be successful wherever you go, especially you ambitious CC'ers :)
