What major should I put down?

I am currently a student at SUNY Old Westbury with a 3.6 GPA after the first semester. I have currently 23 credits completed and I plan on finishing my freshman year SUNY OW and then transferring to Stony Brook fall 2015. I want to pursue dentistry at Stony Brook but it seems tough to get in considering I have not taken any science classes at OW. I had not decided I wanted to do dentistry until October. It was too late to take science classes and science classes for the spring 2015 semester at OW were all taken/did not match my timing. When applying to Stony Brook, would it best if I apply for an English major as I had taken mostly English classes and gotten good grades on them, and then if I get accepted, change my major to something that would lead to dentistry? What are my chances of getting accepted or rejected considering SBU requires 24 credits and I only have 23 by the time I apply? By the time I finish freshman year, I will have over 24 credits though. Does it matter if I apply undecided or decided? Thank you very much.

Well, good news and bad news. The good news is that English majors can, and do, apply to med school every year. So you might not have to change your major. As far as the application goes, put down whatever you’re most interested in majoring in, regardless of your future plans. If your interest is in the health sciences, though, I’d strongly recommend you find a way to get at least one calc course and one hard science (chem, ideally) on your schedule this spring.

However – not meeting the 24 credit minimum could be an issue. If you have less than 24 credits at the time of application, we need EITHER (a) your final HS transcript and SAT/ACT scores, OR (b) we’ll wait until you receive your final grades in May and re-review your application if we still have space at that time.

Hope this helps.

@sbuadmissions, It’s really nice of you to answer student’s questions, Chris.

Good luck, @Mahakbatra.
