Wagner College announced its 2012-2013 Mainstage MT season will be the Sondheim review “Putting It Together”, “Legally Blonde”, “Rent” & “Guys & Dolls”. First play of the season will be David Ives’ “School for Lies”.

They did “Spring Awakening” as a Tier 2 production this past school year.

City of Angels was the only main stage show. What were the ones that were not student productions? (Spring Awakening, Drowsy?) What theatre are the student productions done in?

Spring Awakening, Drowsy, and the cabaret were student-produced, along with a one-act student-written musical.

Das Barbecu was the Experimentals show.

We have one large proscenium theater, the Bing, and the rest of the shows are done in our smaller (under 100 seats, I believe) black box-type spaces: The Massman, the Scene Dock (though the last musical there was Cabaret in fall 2010), the McClintock, and the Village Gate. Spring Awakening, Das Barbecu, and Drowsy were in the Massman, and the BC/EFA cabaret was in the Village Gate, which is actually a converted shoe store. I can’t think of any musicals that were in the McClintock, which is the newest/nicest, I believe, but in terms of space, the McClintock, Scene Dock, and Massman are all pretty much interchangeable. School of Theatre shows tend to go up in the Bing, McClintock, and Scene Dock, while student productions are usually in the Massman or Village Gate.

Thanks! wisdomsomehow. We took the theatre department tour a couple of weeks ago and none of those productions were mentioned so we thought there were very few musicals. Now I see there are many more.

Of the schools where my son’s applying, already we know of FOUR doing Spring Awakening. Am considering using it as a basis for comparison…we could be like those people who used to follow around the Grateful Dead, but travel from school to school watching productions of SA. Let me know if anyone wants to caravan…

My S asked to be in our community theatre’s production of Spring Awakening last fall. We said yes, not knowing too much about the musical. We got an awakening alright!!! LOL! I will say, the music is beautifully haunting - and I still listen to it often.

It must be fun to already look forward to your plays and musicals at your chosen colleges. Freshmen - how do you think the productions will be compared to your high school’s? Better sets and costumes - bigger audiences - more directors/choreographers? SO EXCITING!

It was really funny when I first created this post because there were so many schools doing SA! BARE is a similar contemporary musical. I almost feel like writers are looking to see just how far they can push the envelope. Marbleheader, I totally understand about your “awakening,” last summer my D was in staged readings of both SA and BARE and she was the lead in BARE which was well, sketchy for a parent to watch even as a staged reading! 90% of family and friends weren’t invited to the shows due to content/language, etc.

LOL! Yes - we also told family and friends that they might not go for it. My sister-in-laws could barely handle watching RENT (S was Tom Collins and had to smooch another guy). S was in the ensemble, so there wasn’t any nudity for him, but he did sing some questionable songs!

For musicals, Rider is doing “Nine” in the fall and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” in the spring. They’re also presenting “Cole”, a musical review of Cole Porter songs. For plays, they’re doing “The Misanthrope”, “The Crucible”, and “Crumble (Lay Me Down, Justin Timberlake)”. Sounds like an interesting season to me!

Viterbo is doing A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Fall) and A Chorus Line (Spring) as the two main stage musicals. I think we might also be doing a black box musicla but nothing’s set yet I don’t believe. Our plays are Marat/Sade (Fall), TBD (Winter), and Picnic (Spring). We’ll also have some one acts and student produced works throughout the year.

I can’t believe all the Spring Awakenings popping up! I love that show and I’m really curious to hear about the different processes and interpretations universities do with it.

Here’s what’s been announced so far for Northwestern’s 2012-2013 season. I’ll try to highlight musicals, though more of these may be musicals. As always, others should feel free to correct and/or update this.
