Hi!
I'm currently starting on my college applications (for the common application, to be specific) and they've listed the awards section for "Academic Awards".
I'm not really sure what that means, and it's not to my advantage considering that my school has no honor roll and that's the type of example they give for an academic honor.
But I have won a few poetry and short story awards from my school district, and I have also won some engineering awards from both county and state fairs. I'm not sure if they classify as "academic awards", though they do seem pretty significant to mention and I can't think where else they would fall under in a college application. Can anyone clarify and tell me if these awards are classified as "academic awards/honors"?
Thank you!

They are definitely "academic awards", without a doubt.

do NHS or SHS count as honors?

I put NHS under "Extracurriculars".

NHS/SHS are honors/awards if you don't actually do any activities or have any meetings for it. Otherwise, if at your school the NHS actually meets and plans and does things, it's an EC.
