I know there's a list on CC somewhere that I saw, but that list is f***ing huge. I don't see anyone bringing that many items, that'd be just a hassle. Just to sum up in a nutshell, what should I bring to SD? and I also wanna know what do they supply you in the dorms (do they give you a bed, a desk, a chair? I don't even know). All I can think of off the top of my head is clothes, wallet, laptop, and maybe a game system. What else?

from orientation, i saw that the room had a bed, desk, chair for the desk, and a dresser. i'm bringing a mattress foam pad, which i heard makes sleeping a whole lot more comfortable. also, i'm bringing a microwave (you might want a fridge; i'm hoping my roomie will bring that), extra plastic drawers for the dresser, bedding (remember to get extra long twin!), shower stuff, laundry hamper, and a lot of other stuff. since i live in norcal, i just bought everything that will make things more convenient.

it also comes with a bookshelf for the desk.

bringing your own microwave is a good idea because you can keep it for off-campus apartment living, but there's also a nice fridge/microwave rental service if you live on campus. the best part is that they manage the delivery :)

I was kind of wondering the same for our son. Several questions...
1. Do they have an area in the bathroom for them to keep their personal items, ie shampoo, toothbrush, soap, meds etc.. or do they have to bring it to and from their rooms each day and night.
2. In the layout of the room, it shows a bed, nightstand, desk/bookshelf and closet. What about a place to store socks, boxers, shorts etc.. is there some sort of dresser in the closet? Speaking of which, how big are the closets, should he be frugal in the amout of clothing he brings?
3. Are the beds high enough off the ground to store underbed items such as extra towels, linens etc.... any recs on how many sets of towels if space is limited?
4. If they have a laptop, are special locks reccommended? how safe are the dorms when they are not in their rooms?
Just a few things running through my head at 3 in the morning and no I am not a hellicopter parent, just a mom sending her first of 3 children off to school for the first time and actually my son would die if he knew I was on this site asking these questions as I know he is a fellow ccer as well LOL!! Thanks for any advice!

Yes, a small cubby (maybe 1 cubic food in the revelle dorms) but some people also choose to transport things back and forth on their own.

there should be a dresser in the closet ... again, for revelle.

the beds have slightly less than a foot of clearance (some beds have storage drawers underneath) but you can buy your own bed risers from target. i managed on two sets of towels.

depends if they lock their rooms; most people aren't in that habit, but will eventually learn. laptop locks won't deter a theif if the theif is already in the room and armed with hedge clippers.

if your kid's in revelle, i posted some pictures of revelle dorms on the forum. most of the furniture is standard around the campus, though.

There's typically a drawer set provided. The size varies by college, as do the sizes of the closets. This is an approximation, but I think they're around 3-4 feet wide.

A lot of the beds are height adjustable. The lowest setting gives about a foot of clearance whereas the highest setting is high enough that a mini-fridge can fit underneath.

Just keep the door locked. That'll ensure that other items (cameras, video games, etc) that can't be locked down don't go missing.

ERC dorms don't have bookshelves for the desk.

A lot of the closet and drawer space depends on whether you have a double or a triple too. For example, in a triple (in ERC) one person gets stuck with a smaller closet. However you can maneuver things around so that everyone has approximately the same amount of space. (ie. give the drawers beneath the bottom bunk to the person with the smaller clsoet).

whoa, wait... sooo.. the dorms do not provide a tv, a refrigerator, or a microwave?

nope. reshalls and apartments will provide cable TV & internet hookups. apartments come with a fridge. everything else is your responsibility.

(i've never actually heard of a college supplying its students with tvs -- what are they trying to do, encourage wasting time?)

I guess I should have stated what college. He is in Marshall and hopefully will get a single. He applied for housing pretty early so hopefully that will make a difference. He is a tennis player with lots of equipment and needs the space not to mention he is not the neatest kid!! (feel sorry for roomates if he gets stuck in single!) Anyway thanks to all who responded! One last question (Probably not last) how necessary is it for him to have a triton plus account if he has a B of A debit card? I know that there are a couple of B of A atms on campus so it seems redundant to me. Only advantage I can see might be in doing laundry, but what are your experiences? As for the room layout, Astrina we did see your photos, thanks for all that you offer it's a great help! Are the rooms the same in Marshall? I am aware that some Marshall students end up in Revelle dorms as well. What determines that?

I would say the only real advantage in having tritonplus is in doing laundry. I lived on campus for two years and never got it. It just depends on whether or not your son is willing to save up those quarters, haha.

Triton plus is optional and best used for laundry.
If your son signed up for housing early, it's unlikely that he'll end up in Revelle's fleet housing. I don't know if you've seen this page before, but it's worth looking at. Thurgood Marshall College: UC San Diego's Third College
