What should I buy for my dorm over the summer?

So I’m starting college in the fall at UC davis and I’m wondering what some of the essentials are for my dorm or even just overall what i might need. Stuff that you wouldn’t normally think of too. I wanna get a head start buying stuff. Any ideas?

A fan? I know it gets hot and there probably is air con, but who knows how high they set the thermostat? I would buy a small one just in case.

Depending on who you’re rooming with, you should probably bring a fan. Some roommates will think differently of differing temperatures (let’s hope that doesn’t lead to any animosity…).

Thanks, I never thought of that but its a good idea. Especially since I hear it gets so hot there

I loveeeeeed the AC in the dorms. I didn’t invest in a fan since our AC worked amazingly (I lived in Ryerson where you were still able to manually adjust the temperature – the newer dorms have a centralized unit so the controls pretty much do diddly squat). But since fans are relatively cheap, it might be nice to have just in case.

Other than your bed sheets, mattress pad, comforter, and maybe a shower caddy/container, there isn’t much else you need for your dorm. Maybe a wireless router so you could go wireless throughout your floor/be able to use the internet on your bed without a pesky ethernet cable.

Oh! How about a hot water dispenser? I’m not sure if those are legal in the rooms though, lol.

I bought my supplies from ■■■■■■■■■■■■! They actually provide you everything and let you pick your colors. I saved more money than my friends and it was delivered to me for free!

Fun fact: IF you get placed into Cuarto, you get to control the thermostat yourself, because it’s located in the living room of every suite. But anyway, a small fan would be nice to bring just in case your roommate (and/or suitemates) doesn’t want the AC on, and during the regular school year, it’s only hot in September and from mid-April to June (not counting the rest of the summer months because you have to vacate the dorms after spring finals anyway).

@ marzxbarz: as long as the RA doesn’t see it when they make one of those random room checks (but they notify you via a note on the door on when they plan to do so so it’s not a surprise)

@marzxbarz Well, I know I have a hot air popcorn popper and one of my roommates has a water boiler. Those aren’t allowed and we’ve gotten away with it with no trouble. Just make sure it’s hidden when they’re doing checks. Note: We’re in Cuarto, so it’s probably a bit easier to hide the sounds of the popper than in the other two areas.

I would suggest bringing command strips so that you can put stuff on the walls. Even if you don’t plan on putting up pictures, posters, or whatever else, it’s useful to at least have a couple command hooks up to hang keys (especially if you’re in an area that uses keys instead of your Aggiecard).

If you’re in Cuarto, bring an ethernet cord. Even if one of your suitemates brings a router, it’s good to have a backup in case the router goes down for whatever reason.

I’m sure there’s stuff I’m forgetting. I’ll post if I think of anything else.
