What should my schedule look like?

I'm a direct admit into the kelley school and I'm kind of confused as to what classes i should be taking next year. Does anyone have a sample of what my schedule should look like for next year. I'm double majoring in Finance & Accounting. Thanks.

Welcome to this thread. The courses you need to take depend upon how many credits you can claim from AP courses and if you are in Hutton Honors College. There are a number of helpful posts in the following thread if you have not reviewed them yet:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/indiana-university-bloomington/882230-econ-201-question.html

Here is what I took freshman year (I am a double major in accounting and finance, minor in econ)

First semester:
3 cr. BUS-K 201, The Computer in Business (i-core pre req)
3 cr. ECON-E 201, Intro to Microeconomics (i-core pre req and econ req)
3 cr. CMCL-C 121, Public Speaking (i-core pre req (instead of BUS-X 104))
3 cr. PHIL-P 100, Intro to Philosophy (gen ed.)
3 c.r. gen ed (I forget the course number, it was Quantum Mysteries for Everyone)

Second Semester:
3 cr. ECON-E 321, Intermediate Microeconomic Theory (econ req)
3 cr. BUS-X 201, Decision Technology (i-core pre req)
3 cr. BUS-X 204, Business Communications (i-core pre req)
2 cr. BUS-X 220, Career Perspectives (i-core pre req)
1 cr. BUS-A 100, Basic Accounting Skills (i-core pre req)
1 cr. HPER-R 117, Organizational Leadership (or something to that extent, gen ed).

I came in with credit for MATH-M 211 (4cr., Calc I, i-core pre req), PHY-P 221 (5 cr.,Physics I, gen ed), CHEM-C 121 (5 cr., something in chemistry, gen ed), and PSY-P 101 (3cr., Intro to Psych, gen ed), and was exempt from ENG-W 131 (i-core pre req).

I took a lot of classes over the summer after freshman year

At IU
3 cr. MATH-K 310, Stats (i-core pre req)
2 cr. BUS-G 202, Corporate Social Strategy (i-core pre req)

At a community college
4 cr. (don’t ask how) BUS-A 201, Intro to Financial Accounting (i-core pre req)
3 cr. BUS-A 202, Intro to Managerial Accounting (i-core pre req)
3 cr. BUS-L 201, Business Law (i-core pre req)
3 cr. ECON-E 202, Intro to Macroeconomics (business degree req and econ req)
3 cr. HIST-H 100 level, History Through Napolean (gen ed)

In hindsight I would have taken E370 instead of K310 in order to get more credits forr my econ minor out of the way. Also, the more classes you take over the summer the easier class load you can take during the school year.

maxellis,

It looks like that you took credit from M211 for M118 and M119. Since AP Cal A/B and B/C can be used for M211 and M212, may a Kelley DA student take AP credits (Calc A/B & B/C) for M118 and M119?

Thanks

Yes, ap credits will count towards M211 (which is a substitute for M119), but you can’t get ap credit for M118.

maxellis,

I did not see M118 in your listing. Did you take M118 during sophomore year?

I fail to understand why M118 can’t be substituted by a higher level math course, by SAT score, or by a test. Please shed some light on that.

I did take M118 as a sophomore. The material in M118 doesn’t really relate to a specific math classe taught in high school. The material is a lot of matrices, probabilities (permutations and combinations), decision tress, linear optimization, etc. While it is not a difficult class, I doubt people who got a certain score on the SAT’s or took a higher level math class would know all the material (meaning the class would be a redundacy of things the student already knows).

However, I did go into the class knowing some of the matieral from a variety of high school classes.

maxellis,

Thanks for the details. It is very helpful for many students to plan for the future.

maxellis I am a direct admit accounting major- and I am tempted to maybe double major along with finance. Do you believe your schedule was manageable and beneficial? I am taking finite math at my CC this summer to get that out of the way also and took AP Calc hoping to get at least a 4 on that, along with AP Psych.

It is an extra 5 classes to go from only accounting to accounting and finance (only 4 classes if you are in the business honors program/getting an econ minor and only 3 extra classes if you are doing both). So you could look at it as an extra semester/half a semester.

While I have just about completed my accounting major and have barley started on my finance one, I have talked to friends who have finished their finance classes/looked at their material and can say that several finance classes are much easier than the accounting ones.

Also, with the exception being a full time student for one summer and freshman year/i-core, I am taking 12 cr. semesters and will only need to take 5 cr. my last semester of senior year (I could easily graduate a semester early, but I want to enjoy all 4 years). So it is very manageable, especially if you come in with ap credits.

Even if you don’t do well on the ap calc test, you can still take IU’s calc test during orientation and get those 4 credits for M211.

Actually, getting the accounting/finance double major requires adding only two classes over getting just the accounting major. The accounting major requires three classes (9 credits) from a concentration other than accounting, for instance taking three finance classes, or three BEPP classes, or three management classes. A lot of people take three finance classes to meet this requirement. And when they add just two more finance classes, these last two classes give them the double major.

These five will always include F303 and F305, which are both required for all finance majors. Then you add three more classes to get a concentration in different types of finance, such as

Corporate Finance Electives:

* F307 Working Capital Management

 • F402 Corp Financial Strategy and Governance
 • F408 Real Options and Strategic Capital Investment

Investments Electives:

* F335 Security Trading and Market Making

 • F420 Equity and Fixed Income Investments
 • F421 Derivative Securities and Corporate Risk Management

Banking Electives:

* F446 Banking and Financial Intermediation

 • G345 Money, Banking, and Capital Markets

one more 400-level finance elective

Good point^^^. I completely forgot about accountings requirement for 3 other classes.
