Amherst’s webpage says that review of Regular Decision applications begins on 3/3/08! Applications were due January 1st-- do they really do nothing with them for two months, and then review every single of the ~7000 applications in one month??

Yes, they begin on March 3rd. That gives them a little less than a month to review the 5-6 thousand applications they will receive. Unlike larger universities that can receive twenty-thousand applications or thereabout, the admissions office does not need quite as much time to decide on the admitted class.

I was puzzled by that too. I kind of assumed that individual admissions officers would be reading files before then, but the committee deliberations would begin 3/3. Doesn't Amherst do some sort of early write? I just can't imagine they completely put the brakes on until March, but maybe they just have a very large or extra-competent staff!

I think you're right, Rainmama. I know the DoA will be in next week. They don't have ED II or a grad school, what are they going to do, twiddle their thumbs for a month.5 while apps pour through the doors?

My guess is that there's a lot of filing that goes on in that time, at least during January. 7000-8000 applications is a lot of paper to sort through.

Yeah, I don't think it's a typo. I think until March 3/3 they're just filing. It's a lot of paper, lol. I just wish that Amherst had some kind of online tracking page so that we could see when all of our papers are processed.

They do have an online tracking page. You'll get a user name and ID to track your application materials when they receive your application. I am sure that the things are filed as they are logged onto the system. So you'll know, at least when the process can be started.

rainmama's right, they're reading essays etc., then on 3/3 begin the review process, tha is reviewing what they've read and making final decisions.

They do a lot before they make the final decisions, which start then. They do Early Writes, as well, and D received hers before April 1st, so they don't just start to do anything then, they make decisions starting then.
