What things are issued on I-Day?

Son is asking what things are issued on I-Day? Is there a good link/thread that covers this anywhere?

Honestly, the basics are issued. Uniform wise, it is just white works (blue rims) and cammies (if I recall correctly); shoes/boots; uniform accessories. A lot of hygiene necessities are found inside the Bancroft Hall room (pre-delivered in plastic boxes) along with shoe/boot cleaning products. Pretty much the necessary uniforms to get through plebe summer are issued right away. Other uniforms are issued/fitted/altered during plebe summer.

Is there anything specific you are looking for?

Anything and everything your plebe-to-be will need to kick of Plebe Summer will be provided.

You will receive everything from cleaning supplies to stationary and stamps to write home. One helpful thing that I suggest for writing letters home is to send your candidate with preaddressed envelopes. Very little time is available to write letters home. On the schedule it is published that you have about an hour free every day however in reality it will be more like 15 minutes, and in that time your whole room needs to take showers and get ready for blue and gold.

You will get your whites about a week before going to the orioles game so late in the summer. Most of the summer will be spent in white works/ cammies.

When is this orioles game?

I have read to show up with the clothes on your back and required paperwork. Should the plebes really not pack the items on the list in the PTR? Wouldn't they get in trouble for not following direction when told what to pack?

I would have your incoming plebe simply pack what they tell you to - it isn't much, six pairs of socks, underwear, etc.

They are 99.9% likely to take it away, anyway - but at least they will have followed the directions given, right?

Oh, and every time I wrote to my plebe I sent a little cash, maybe $5 - $10, in case he didn't have his wallet and had a chance to go to the Mid store. When he eventually did have a chance to do this, he didn't have to get in the long line at the ATMs. I think he had a couple of visits there to buy stuff like cotton balls, Q-tips, etc. -

Really, you will not get in trouble for "not following directions" You don't need the stuff and it will all come back home at PPW. They issue everything that is needed.

So I shouldn't buy the white t's and boxer briefs or socks? Should I bring toiletries (razor, toothbrush, ect)? I am bringing my new pair of running shoes that I have been breaking in...

From the looks of things, I am gathering this list:

Cell phone (with charger)
Running shoes (new but broken in)
Immunization papers
Permit to Report paper
Copies of all PTR paperwork sent in and other various papers needed
Wallet
Clothes on my back

Is this it??? Possibly a calculator for people planning to take chem/physics validation tests?

Hopefully some newly minted Youngster will chime in...but I believe everyone takes the tests...not just for validation, but for placement, as well. If so, the calculator is helpful. I believe JayBee's list gets it done. I know our son took a men's shampoo/body soap combo (made by Neutrogena) that he had been using at home (one lathering gets everything done... Head to toe. Makes for a quicker shower and less "stuff" in the bathroom or his con locker. Bars of soap are a pain during Alpha inspections). He had even packed it in a sliding zippered plastic bag so if it leaked, it wouldn't be an issue.) However, that wasn't able to be unloaded from his small bag he carried in, and it got crushed during the slinging of bags and/or in storage through the summer. Vast majority of that soap went into the contents of the bag. No soap was needed to wash all the socks/t-shirts/boxers he had bought, packed and taken. I guess all the bags around his smelled nice, however...
I had to rinse that whole mess out with cold water to dilute the soap before any of it could be washed. New toothbrush taken for I-Day and summer was tossed (he said it tasted like the body soap...blech), as was the very soapy razor, etc. So, be careful if taking anything that can pop/explode/be crushed.
It is recommended that you don't show up in flip flops. And snazzy sayings or particular ensignia (malleted men on horseback come to mind) on t-shirts will be noticed (and perhaps commented upon). Low key, under the radar is the mode to go with...
Our son's choice? Very plain collared polo shirt (no insignia...took some doing to find one), white walking shorts, plain belt, broken in running shoes, low cut socks. Think he probably had on a white t-shirt (he usually did/does) and whatever he wore for briefs/boxers...no idea... Took in a very small bag (14"L duffle, at most) with his list of stuff in it. Had the calculator and cell phone (bagged in a ziploc with it's charger) within easy access, and copies of his paperwork in hand (needed them, too...) Also had his ID & passport with him. Was able to keep the passport, calculator, and his wallet and clothes on his back. Think they kept all the paperwork (no idea). Cell phone went to his cadre (no idea when). All else in the bag and the bag came back intact (and taped tight with masking tape) at PPW. Has never complained about any of that processing day...

Kevins mom...Orioles game is later in July or into August. I think they split up the Plebes into 2 or maybe 3 trips to the game... As an FYI to those reading...Parents can certainly show up at the same time, but you will not be able to converse with your Plebe. They are not to talk to anyone at the game... Not worth getting restriction just before PPW, that's for sure... It's recommended parents sit this one out, and let your Plebes just be Plebes for that game.

To add to that....if you are a parent and you want to attend the game (for whatever reason), make sure you are WELL CLEAR of the area that the plebes are in. Either last year or two years ago, there was an incident where a parent was caught with their child at the O's game. Don't be that parent! The same thing applies with chapel services -- distance yourself.

FYI, the list on the PTR package is a recommendation. Obviously, certain things are highly recommended, like the cell phone. Clothing like undershirts and underwear are recommended, but not a necessity. There is no check to whether you brought the listed items (minus the required paperwork).

Don't wear a varsity sports shirt, your letter jacket or anything like that. My recommendation: stick with a nice "golf" type or button-up shirt with nice shorts (pants aren't required).

I have a quick question about birth control pills - since they're a prescription medicine will you be allowed to keep those on I-Day and through the summer?

And do you get to keep any toiletries (toothbrush, hairbrush, etc.)?

I didn't make a copy of everything in the PTR packet except the things that they told us too...will that be a problem?

I've talked to a few newly formed youngsters and they said that all of the stuff they were told to pack (i.e. 6 pairs of this and that) were taken away and some were never seen again.

Was true for 2010 too. All taken away and returned to mom at PPW. Do not wear anything on IDay that you do not want to have go missing... clothing and other things do get lost and are never seen again.

Looking back at our IDay pictures the attire in line was a mix between polo style and just nice tshirts. So wore just a t shirt and was fine. Before walking into Alumni Hall just make sure your shirt is tucked in! You will get yelled at if it is not.

Hi there,

I'm one of those new youngsters and I remember taking almost nothing in on I-day. I had copies of all my paper work, cell phone, charger, calculator, and ID and credit cards in my backpack. One piece of advice is don't take a black backpack or bag. Everyone will have one. Mine was orange and easy to find in a huge pile. Once you get to your room there will be large boxes with all that you will need. This is the time to pull out your calculator and any clothes that you might decide to bring. The bag will be safe with the cadre after that. I left my credit card in it and was able to get it before the baseball game.

And birth control pills are allowed as long as you tell them about it. On I-day you will sit down at a private table with someone from medical and you can show them then. They are very cool about it and will make sure you are good to go.

Hope this helps and I can't wait to meet you guys next year.
Good luck!

oh...and don't worry about not following directions. They tell you what is a good idea to bring, but in the long run, it will just weigh you down. The upperclass don't really care if you brought extra underwear because you are issued tons.

aside from a toothbrush, running shoes on your feet, and a copy of your immunization record tucked in your wallet, you need nothing. Consider everything "secondary, optional and conditional," and remind your parents that should you need anything, flat-rate boxes are the way to go!
