When any of you firts went to Cornell and got homesick, what did you guys do? I mean, it's not like you can take the bus and just go home in an hour. Right now I live in Boston, and because MA is a small state, going everywhere is really convenient. But Ithaca is like in the middle of the giant state of NY. I'm really worried that I won't be able to reach anywhere when I need to... How do you guys "get out"?

You get it over it, I guess.

I'm just the parent of an applicant, not a current student, but my daughter and I noticed that Cornell has a four-day Fall Break in October. Lots of students seem to go home then, and there would certainly be charter buses available to a common destination like Boston. So a freshman going to Cornell doesn't have to go the full three months before Thanksgiving before having a chance to go home for a bit. I think that might help with the homesickness problem.

hey its no that bad/ i hav a friend in prep school in connecticut as a sophmore but he rly lives in GA

In addition to the early October fall break, there is Freshman Parents Weekend at the end of October to break up the time between fall break and Thanksgiving. Kids respond to homesickness in a variety of ways -- the "home-focused" way by, for example, having lots of calls to parents and friends from home, visits to high school friends at other schools, or the "campus-focused" way of just getting involved in campus and Ithaca community activities so that school starts to feel more comfortable. I think it is common for freshman to be homesick in one way or another, but the feeling lessens over time. It is not unique to college. Even adults moving to a new job or house or neighborhood take about 6 months to settle in and feel "at home."

Thanks, I feel more assured. I was just worried because I know a lot of my friends will be going to schools around Boston (and Boston have a lot of schools.) But in Ithaca, there's only 2 colleges. I hope someone I know from my school will go to Cornell too if I get in lol

I'm a freshman from California but I go to Cornell, and homesickness isn't a problem at all. I think these days with phones and e-mail "homesick" has a different meaning than in the times of letters and carrier birds. And as mentioned above Cornell does a great job at trying to give opportunities to have visitors.
