...you've been deferred, and your regional rep. isn't incredibly helpful? I've already e-mailed my rep. to tell him about the additional material I plan to send. Although I'd asked him to give me specific tips to improve my application, he hasn't done so. I thought this was strange, especially since the UPenn reps., I know, were helpful. How have your reps. responded? Any suggestions on steps I could take would be appreciated! Thanks :)

i'm sorry to hear ur rep has been unhelpful. i'm gonna contact my rep in mid January, once i get some updates from a science competition. I guess u can email him again, and if he's still unhelpful, then the best you can do is write a letter expressing how Yale's still your #1 choice and all that.

should we email that? or send it directly to yale...

First, a lot of admissions officers have been out of town for the holidays. Second, the admissions officers have thousands of applicants from their areas and it would be hard if everyone wanted to correspond with them. Third, I'm not sure how appropriate it would be for an admissions officer to outline for you the weaknesses in your application; that creates a bit of an unfair advantage and may violate the confidentiality of the admissions committee. Fourth, there may not be any weaknesses per se, they just have to compare you to the total pool of applicants, so the admissions officer wouldn't have much to tell you. Finally, if your extracurriculars aren't as competitive, your essay not quite as snazzy, your GPA too low, there's not much you can do to change things at this point. You can't rewrite history.

My suggestion would just be to do the widely known things that can be done at this point: report any new awards/honors and let Yale know it's still your top choice.

This email is not meant to sound *****y, so please don't take it that way. I'm just trying to offer some explanations.

Notfadeaway: You should probably send that by regular mail, directly to Yale.
AdmissionsAddict: Hmm...I guess you're right. Maybe Yale reps. just * don't * offer specific suggestions like the reps. in UPenn. Thanks for your advice; that's probably the best I can do.

yukster--Just out of curiosity, what kind of suggestions do the reps at Penn offer at this point in the game? I believe you that it happens, but I'm having a hard time imagining what helpful advice they could give after an application has already been submitted.

"She really helped me out, she really knew my app in and out, she discussed many details with me from my essays to recs to ECs and deferral reversal techniques. I don't want to give away the specific advice, but i would definitely advise you to contact your rep.
PS she told me that SATs really mean squat, i expressed that i thought the only reason i was deferred was b/c of my SATs (1800), she said to take it again if i wanted to, it was no biggie
Reply to your PS
I just asked what my app was lacking and why i was deferred, thats all, i presented my self very confidently and forthright."

did u apply for Fin. Aid Yukster?

Yup, callthecops2, I did.
