You’d be less happy if your kid ended up in a forced triple next fall, and was shut out of multiple classes needed to start their major sequence because the college didn’t practice yield management and overenrolled the class. There are benefits for more than just the college to careful yield management practices, and the waitlist is one of their key tools.
I would add UVA to the list that they probably won’t take any off the WL.
@gardenstategal - I think you misunderstood. CWRU offers merit aid a few days after the original decisions come out. So, take for example, my kid. On CWRU decision day, he was waitlisted. Then a day or two later, he got an email stating that they would remain in touch with him and would be informing him of what his financial aid package would be if he were accepted off the waitlist. About a week later, he received a merit aid offer of almost $30,000 (as did many other kids). He was asked every week to confirm whether or not he wanted to remain on the waitlist. I don’t think they have actually extended offers yet off the waitlist for next Fall, but I don’t know for sure because he lost interest a few weeks back.
I know schools like Hamilton would take kids off the WL first that are full pay, especially when they are out of FA money. My kid’s friend worked part time in the admission office at Hamilton when she heard such discussion. She wasn’t too thrilled because she got in through WL and she was full pay.
@hcmom65 Did you or someone hear that from UVA?
@intparent look at Dean J’s blog. She said it on her blog on Tuesday, April 30. With the May 1st deposit deadline looming, I thought I’d give you all a heads up about how the class of 2023 is coming together. Admitted students have until 11:59 PM on May 1st to submit their deposits, but we already know that we will be over the enrollment target for the first year class.
and then, “The tl;dr is that there probably won’t be much waiting list movement at UVA this year. I’ll have another update after May 1st.” Not sure what tl:dr means - it was probably a typo on the blog
Yup, I’d say that is good evidence that UVA doesn’t expect to go to their waitlist this year.
Does UVA ever go to waitlist? I can’t imagine they would have to rely too heavily on the WL (unless they have different campuses to fill like Penn State does)
I just pulled up one of their common data sets, randomly picked 2015-16. They took 405 off the waitlist that year. They can underestimate yield like any other school. Or choose to slightly under-offer to start with, then fill in as needed.
“Probably” not is not the same thing as saying they are definitely not taking anyone off the wait list. UVA has occasionally taken kids off the waitlist but looks like that is unlikely this year, or numbers will be small . I would wait to add it to the list until there is an official statement. Virginia Tech director of admissions has made an announcement that they are not going to the waitlist , haven 't seen that yet with UVA, unless it has just happened?
UVA numbers pulled from the waitlist.
2018-13
2017-112
2016-360
It will vary by year.
Maybe none this year but need an official announcement about exact numbers.
@Trixy34 , thanks for that clarification. Definitely an unusual sequence! But I would actually like to see more schools do this. It allows students to make informed decisions about whether to stay on a WL based on affordability/cost. School A with x merit may be preferable to the school where a deposit has been made and be worth considering should a place be offered. But School A without merit might not be an option. I don’t see how this is about protecting yield though.
Looks like Bates has gone to WL.
@hcmom65 tl;dr is an internet abbreviation for “too long, didn’t read.” It is basically a way of saying “Here’s the short version.”
My D attended CWRU’s admitted student days. Regarding waitlists, there was a private discussion about this - they are careful with their list due to housing primarily and also class/teacher ratios.
Also, the fact that they offer merit aid to waitlist students is awesome.

@drewdad on a W & LCC thread reports S got off the W&L waitlist yesterday.
Scripps is open and accepting
Looks like Trinity (ct) is active.
Harvey Mudd just asked students on their waitlist if they want to remain on it. That usually precedes some waitlist activity, so maybe some upcoming action there.
