What was easier for you, Algebra 1 or Geometry?

I grasped Geometry much easier than Algebra, although I got A’s in both. Algebra II I struggled with greatly though.

In my school Geometry is the equivalent of Algebra II.

I’d say geometry? But I took regular geometry and for some reason we didn’t do proofs.
Algebra I and high school geometry were both horrendously boring for me, though…I didn’t really understand the stuff we did in Algebra I until I got to Algebra II.

MITer94: When I was 8th Grade, I was on ocw and came across that class. I was taking Algebra 1 so I thought it was going to be the same stuff. When I looked at a problem set, I was like w t f. Overall I didn’t like geometry because our textbook made us memorize all these random postulates and when we proved theorums we had to name all the postulates by using some random names.

I have a weird situation so I can’t really say…probably Algebra I because I had a hard time visualizing things in Geometry, but I took Algebra I over the summer before freshman year, so I really did speed through it. Plus my mom taught it to me, and our relationship was having issues at that point in time…so yeah, I honestly can’t say

Both of them were easy, but I really liked Geometry!

@IWillKillForMIT: Yeah, Algebra I at MIT is not the same as high school algebra.

Another deceptively simple topic in mathematics is algebraic geometry. Usually offered as a graduate-level math class.

I was way better at geometry. Geometry is a lot of trigonometry and proofs which are frustrating at the time but are very easy in retrospect. I ended up getting an A both semesters of Geometry honors. When I took Algebra II I had a harder time and got a B and a C each semester.

I was absolutely terrible at Algebra I. My teacher was an idiot and could not teach. I didn’t make that great of grades either. Geometry I was great at. I made A’s and I understood it all except for proofs. I’m taking Algebra II right now and so far it has been easier than both.

Geometry was the first time I really ever used proofs, so that class was probably harder. I honestly don’t remember ever learning anything in algebra 1; I was one of ‘those people’ who never manage to shut up while the teacher is talking. To be fair, that was in 8th grade and the girl and guy that sat next to me were entertaining as hell. I still managed 100s in algebra without learning anything though, so that was cool. The sucky part was using the first few weeks of algebra 2 a couple years ago to go back and teach myself all the topics I missed.

I actually did not take Algebra I. When I was in 7th grade, the highest math class available was pre-algebra. My 8th grade year, they began to offer Algebra I to 7th graders and Geometry to 8th graders. About 20 students in my class were placed in Geometry without having Algebra I (and about 20 students in the class below me took Algebra I without pre-algebra). Totally stupid idea of the school’s in my opinion - all 20 of us struggled immensely in Algebra II.

Geometry was a little on the hard side for me since I didn’t understand Algebra, but I still did well. I am definitely better at geometry/trig than Algebra though - I finished AP Calculus with an A and still barely understand algebra!
