What's the city life like in Binghamton ; Such as the party life how's the clubs, bars, and stuff like that ? also if anyone moved there from Long Island or NYC how does it compare ; does it take a lot of getting use to ? Are the people friendly ? How is the dating scene ? I just want to know what i'm getting myself into before i decide if i want to go here or not. Thanks any information you can give me about Binghamton and the surrounding area is greatly appreciated.

Party scene is really big. If you’re into that sort of thing, you’ll be hitting Downtown a lot during the weekends. Lots of sports bars and clubs, and you’ll get to know the name “The Rat.”

I moved from NYC, and I gotta tell you, it’s quite different. For one thing, it’s in the middle of nowhere. Expect a lot less in terms of stores, people, and …things. No subways, buses come on the hour. You’ll need a car or at least know somebody with a car to get around places without it being a hassle.

So definitely a lot of getting used to. It wasn’t too bad for me, since everything I really needed was on campus. The only reason I’d ever have to go off campus was for Walmart.

People are generally friendly, but if you’re not social, don’t expect to make a lot of friends. If you make the effort, people will like you. However, you can’t expect everyone to like you. In this case, you should just forget about these types of people. Bing’s a very eclectic group. While most people are friendly, there are occasional jerks and ***holes, and very unsocial people. But that’s the case everywhere. Overall, you get what you put in.

Dating scene? Hmm, if you’re hot, expect lots of guys/girls flocking to you. If you’re not, well, college isn’t gonna change that.

Alright thanks for the information what are the surrounding city’s around Binghamton ; How is the job field ?

Do you mean following college? Or part-time job during college?

The area is economically depressed, a lot of people are employed by the university, but there are opportunities if you can find them.

And there’s a ton of stores in Vestal that will hire a college kid (if they hire) but I would rather get a job on campus. It’s much easier but way more competitive. There’s a large variety (some are restricted to work-study) of jobs. Sodexo employs people (food services), the Union employs monitors, the bookstore, some offices and departments, the Student Association, and even some of the communities will hire students.

I meant a part-time job during college. But thanks the information is really helping me with my decision i think i’m going to apply to Bing, and also are banks or financial services hiring at Bing do you think the job outlook would get better during the fall of 2011 ?

Part time jobs you’ll have to compete with everyone and your mom. No, I’m not kidding. Like the poster above said, Binghamton is depressed economically. The recession hit the area hard. Stores thrive when college is in session and the entire area dies during the summer. (For the most part). Part time jobs are limited and competitive. Local high school kids all want jobs, their unemployed parents want jobs, and the thousand+ kids YOUR age who go to the local community college all want jobs.
Listen, BU is great. The Binghamton area…is having problems keeping up.

I honestly don’t know how the area will fix itself up. A lot of the business has dried up but yeah, there may be better opportunities by the time you get here.

If you get into SOM (I assume you’re interested in business school but correct me if i’m wrong), all sorts of banks/financial service recruit at Bing for after college. There are also summer internships but those could be paid or unpaid. Nothing really during the school year is offered unless M&T Bank or Visions Credit Union does something.

Oh dang that really changes my aspects on the place because i don’t want to live on campus i want to get a job while i’m attending school so i can support myself by living off campus.

I do know kids who have full time jobs to support themselves, but they are not that common. And it was tough for them. You may want to consider living on campus for one year because it is difficult to find a group of friends if you commute from the beginning…

Oh alright thanks for letting me know that i don’t think Binghamton would be top on my list it’ll probably end up being a back up.

lol, don’t take this the wrong way, but I actually like the fact that the area is economically depressed. The prices are SOOO low compared to back home. Movie theater tickets are 4.50 Mon-Thu all day. I sometimes would cut class just to catch a cheap showing. Walmart and Target have such LOW prices on nearly everything. Target’s my favorite place to shop since the store is much cleaner and less crowded than Walmart.

If you need a job, you’re better off finding one on campus. The pay is about the same (minimum wage) and it’s sooo convenient. I was a tutor and got paid 9 an hour, which wasn’t too bad.

lol oo i understand but like is it really that bad of a place cuz most of the time i just hear bad things about bing

No its not a “bad place” its just not the best place. Vestal (the town where the university is) is a nice area. You don’t even have to go into the city unless you want the bar scene. If you take Greyhound or Coach, the bus stop area is iffy… Best to be there in the daytime. Other than that, its ok city. I personally don’t plan on living there outside of my years at Bing and that’s ok with me.

oh okay hows bing for a business major can it compare to fiu ?

Yeah, the business school is very well known and ranked highly. But good luck getting in. It’s super selective. Best to get in as a freshmen, after that, it’s a crap-shoot.

Alright the only thing that’s making me hesitate from applying here is the surrounding area i hear so much bad stuff about it idk if i would be able to deal with it for 4 years

Vestal is fine. Nice suburban area with shopping and whatnot. Unless you have to party at the clubs/bars/frats, or want to take a bus that’s not Escape, there is no need to go into Bing the city. Appy to Bing anyway, go visit, and see if you like it.

Alright I’ll do that sometime in the near future. What the best time of year to come visit so i get the full feel of bing. And also what are the closest party citys around bing ; I’ll have a car so transportation won’t be a problem. Also are there security jobs that are open around that area because i know down here In Long Island there are many Security jobs available they usually show up in pennysavers and stuff like that.

I probably visit in late September, early October. Just avoid Parent Visiting weekend (parking is a nightmare). Also the first week of September nobody will be in Bing (the dorms are closed for Rosh Hashannah and Labor Day). The weather will be nice and Fall-like and the leaves will be turning. Go look at CIW when you go, it’s really pretty that time of year.

And I’m not sure what you mean by “Party City…” Do you mean the party supply store? If yes, go to their website and look it up. Bing’s zip code is 13902. Or do you more figuratively, like “woohoo party!” city. And as for a security job, do you mean bouncers? I’m sure you can find something, there’s plenty of clubs in Bing the city.

Alright thanks I’ll be looking forward to visiting ; and when i said part city i meant that figuratively lol. But securities jobs not so much for bouncers just like aromred truck security, bank security etc.
