I'm international, and i haven't been to northern california. I'm wondering what kind of climate there is, and what kind of clothing people need to wear.

It can get hot but generally it is cooler.

Mornings are always cold, then sometimes it gets real hot, then cold at night again. That's about it..

C'mon, people. Use some degrees, "hot" and "cold" are pretty relative.

Do many people wear shorts? If one wears jeans, is one generally hot? During which seasons/months? (i'll take a relative answer for that one) :D

The advice I have gotten about "what clothing to wear" at Berkeley has been to "layer", so you can "shed" clothes has the day warms up.

What the above posters have said is true, the temperature tends to shift from 50's-60's (F) in the morning to high as the 80's-90 (F) in the afternoon. These temperatures apply more to the summer months.

It rains a lot in the fall and winter...I'm still looking for a good rain coat.

april-september/october is exactly what gemini said. starts off cool (but not cold) and ends up warm (but not hot). cool = 50/60's. hot = high 80's/90's. usually it will go from high 50's in the morning to mid 70's in the afternoon. there's usually a week or two in late august or early september where it's at least 90 everyday. usually happens once in the spring too.

the rest of the months... is it just me or does temperature not really change from morning to afternoon? rain. lots of rain. have to stash those flipflops away. :( even though it rains, it's still not very cold. 50's, maybe.

of course, you'll have the odd weeks. i've lived in the bay area all my life and i've definitely seen rain during august and blazing sun in january. but that doesn't happen often.

Because I think the OP wanted to know the weather, specifically, during school time...

You can expect a lot of rain (umm... 30 inches?). Morning fog, overcast, and some sunshine during the winter months. Afternoon highs from the low 50's to mid-70s, morning/night lows from low 40's to upper 50's. Frost on some occasion, but no snow. I think that's right... shrug

TTG

I've lived here all my life and heres are some trends in the climate. Summer is warm but I wouldn't say hot. Usually hits high 70s. September is the hottest month of the year, but it cools down quickly after that. Winter can get a little chilly in the mornings, but never enough to see snow. Temperatures in the winter hits a high in the mid 60s in the afternoon. Gets really foggy and ice will form on windshields of cars during the colder mornings. Light rain usually starts in December and on to spring. Hail/thunderstorms are pretty rare. Great weather in the spring in the low 70s with bright sunshine. Climate beats anywhere else I've been to and I would not have it any other way

I can pretty much wear a t-shirt and jeans year round. Just need a jacket for chilly mornings and nights.

someone would have to be crazy not to wear a jacket in the morning

It's cool, but it gets hot in the springtime.

Bring an umbrella.................................................................

Here's how the weather is on the Peninsula in the Bay Area. This is just accross the bay from Berkeley so I suspect the weather is very similar.

The coldest it ever gets in the winter (at night) is about 35 F. The hottest it ever gets in the summer in the day is about 95 F.

I'd say the 75th percentile mark in the summer (that is, the bottom of the hottest 25 percent of temperatures in the summer) would be around 85 F, and the 25th percentile mark of winter day time (that is, the top of the coldest 25 percent of temperatures in the winter) temperatures would be around 50.

Oh and it probably rains 15-20 inches per year. Rainy season is from late November to late April. Most rain happens in December through March.

tropical rainforest. monkeys swinging around everywhere. you might be able to catch a glimpse of a toucan every now and then.

ok Berkeley residents may be insane..but not THAT insane to swing off trees and oo-oo-aa-aa everywhere.

Oh and there really ARE Wild parrots in San Francisco/Bay Area. Did you guys see that documentary....

hahah so your funny post was actually more truthful

Thanks. I really needed to get some idea so that i could gear up for this fall.
